Position Summary
Scholars at Risk (SAR) seeks a Deputy Director (DD) to have overall responsibility for SAR’s day-to-day programming, internal operations and administration. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the DD supports the Executive Director and the SAR Board, promoting the organization’s vision and championing its mission to protect scholars and promote academic freedom worldwide. Fostering a culture of efficiency, teamwork, transparency and collaboration, the DD directly supervises SAR’s protection, advocacy, research, and membership teams and has primary responsibility for day-to-day operations, including communications, finance and audit, information systems, human resources, and facilities. Among the immediate priorities is enriching services for current network member institutions, while increasing support and opportunities for scholars and other at-risk individuals.

The Deputy Director supports the Executive Director’s focus on increasing SAR’s engagement with governments, higher education leaders, human rights mechanisms, the media, and donors by ensuring the smooth management of SAR existing network and services. Toward that end, the ideal candidate encourages innovation and fosters collaboration and teamwork while clearly communicating shared operational priorities and metrics, directing and aligning systems, processes and objectives without stifling individual and team initiative and creativity. This role is based in New York City and may involve occasional domestic or international travel.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The successful candidate will be an experienced, thoughtful, and inspiring manager with a commitment to SAR’s mission and a track-record of successful operational leadership in complex organizations. The successful candidate will have a proven ability to attract and retain top talent, motivate and unite teams, delegate effectively, promote and celebrate diversity, and manage performance in a fair, consistent, and transparent manner; handle sensitive information in a discreet, professional manner; develop and align systems, processes, and teams across an organization to enable clear decision-making and accountability; keen analytical and problem-solving skills; a track-record of sound decision-making; evidence of strong enduring professional relationships. Interest in working with and supporting diversity in individuals and cultures is essential. Previous experience working in higher education, human rights or related international organizations is a distinct advantage. Above all, the successful candidate must be able to establish a successful relationship with the Executive Director and quickly earn the confidence of the Board, staff, network members, and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibility for SAR’s research, advocacy & direct-assistance activities (70%):
--Directly supervise all aspects of SAR’s research, advocacy, protection, and membership teams, including regular meetings with and among team directors; jointly establishing SAR-wide and team goals; and tracking progress according to established metrics.
--Play a primary role in developing, researching, and editing SAR reports, papers, advocacy campaigns, academic freedom/values course materials, articles, op-eds and other materials.
--Oversee SAR’s communications and media outreach activities in furtherance of SAR’s mission and strategic plan.
--Represent SAR as appropriate with stakeholders, partners, and funders.
--Support the Executive Director and Chair of the Board Development Committee in fundraising to sustain SAR’s research, advocacy and direct-assistance activities.

Financial & operations oversight supporting SAR’s research, advocacy & direct-assistance (20%):
--Exercise primary responsibility for SAR’s financial systems, including budgeting, expenses and revenue tracking across grant and gift accounts; supervising internal and external accounting and audit staff; communication with NYU finance officers; and reporting to the Executive Director and Chair of the Board Finance and Audit Committee.
--Exercise primary responsibility for SAR’s internal operations, including information systems, human resources, and facilities; maintain relations with relevant NYU officers.

Strategic leadership in support of SAR’s research, advocacy & direct-assistance goals (10%):
--Work closely with the Executive Director and Board to translate their vision into a clearly articulated operational strategy aligned with SAR’s mission and strategic plan.
--Focus on outcomes and continuous improvement. Ensure that the management, staffing, and culture of the SAR’s internal operations are aligned with SAR’s mission and strategic plan.
--With the Executive Director and Chair of the Board, ensure that SAR has effective strategic planning and implementation processes, including transition planning for key roles.

Required Education: Graduate degree in a relevant field or extensive comparable experience.

Required Experience: 7+ years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
