Grounds Equipment Operator Job Number Full/Part Time Schedule Salary 201908205521 Full Time Other $35,893 - $50,279 Position Information The Grounds Equipment Operator ensures the safety and security of students, faculty and staff by maintaining the hard and soft landscape, as well as preserving the aesthetic beauty of the landscape and buildings of the UCR Campus Community.

Operates specialized medium to heavy power grounds and related equipment including backhoes, ditch trenchers, skip loaders, auto-scrubbers, trailer pressure washers, turf mowers, and dump trucks to perform repairs and maintenance of hard and soft landscaped areas of the campus and related buildings. Performs mowing operations and other turf related tasks, including aerifying, verticutting, grading, fertilizing and mowing. Operates equipment to load, unload and haul debris, soil, metals and other materials. Performs preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment. Cleans, prepares, and performs minor asphalt and concrete repairs. Assists in cleaning storm drains, ditches and other drainage systems, and servicing parking lots and related areas. Assists in coordinating landscaping operations with athletics staff, recreation staff, students, faculty and coaches. During times of operational needs, may operate cleaning equipment and assist with event set-up/clean-up; and perform other grounds keeping and refuse duties as assigned. The selected candidate will work with a team of committed, results-oriented staff focused on providing excellent customer service and creating a safe, sustainable and well maintained environment.

Facilities Services is one of the largest departments at UC Riverside employing nearly 400 career employees. The department maintains buildings, facilities and landscape totaling over 6 million square feet across 1,350 acres of campus. Work schedule: Thursday through Monday; 4:30 AM - 1:00 PM. Minimum Requirements One year experience operating medium to heavy power grounds equipment such as backhoes, ditch trenchers, skip loaders and tractors. Ability to safely use and perform maintenance on all landscaping equipment and hand/power tools; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in the English language with co-workers, supervisors and the general public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Previous experience operating mowing and other turf related equipment, and hydraulic equipment.

Skill, ability and knowledge in using mechanical tools required to maintain all landscaping related equipment such as hand wrenches, gas/oil mixing and hand files.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Physical requirements: ability to lift equipment, tools and/or materials weighing up to 75 pounds waist high. Ability to safely work from ladders up to eighteen feet high and on the roofs of buildings up to four stories high. Ability to work with all hand and power tools or equipment common to the landscaping trade that requires constant pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching from ground level to overhead.

Environmental requirements: ability to work for prolonged periods of time in conditions with excessive noise requiring ear and eye protection from equipment, chain saws, power mowers, edgers, blowers, vacuums and hedge trimmers. Ability to safely work around moving machinery and equipment. Ability to work for extended periods of time in extreme and inclement weather conditions ranging from high heat with humidity, to freezing and rainy conditions. Ability to work in wet, malodorous, and dusty conditions due to plant pollens, grass, tree and shrub clippings, fertilizers, animal droppings, and fumes due to gas powered engines.

Hired candidate must pass a background check through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI; must obtain or possess a valid CA Driver License in accordance with California Department of Motor Vehicles; must participate in the campus DMV pull; and successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience and skill prioritizing work orders, routine work, emergency requests, combined with the knowledge to choose the proper materials and equipment to accomplish the work in the most expeditious and safe manner.

Two years experience in turf and landscape maintenance.

Skilled experience with concrete and asphalt installation and repair.

Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled and emergency overtime.
