Job Description PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Database Developer/Administrator II provides support for the Business Intelligence (BI) and Data Warehousing systems at LSC, including but not limited to installation of software, patching, tuning, troubleshooting, ETL management and maintenance activities. Serving as subject matter expert and end-user liaison for Business Intelligence tools and SQL Server Database, position supports end-users in BI- and database-related activities as required. Assists in the design, implementation and use of databases and their associated environments, manages and maintains all production and non-production databases, and performs backup, restoration and disaster recovery on deployed database systems. Responsible for standards and design of physical data storage, maintenance, access and security administration.

Works closely with business, infrastructure and application development teams to recommend architecture solutions based on the data storage and retrieval needs within Lone Star College. Makes decisions about what data is being collected, how data flows through the system, and how data is used and analyzed, and works closely/liaisons with Analytics, Institutional Reporting, OTS, TS-Server and other operations teams in the performance of duties. Reviews, analyzes and documents defined architectural models or views that show how the needs of the organization will be met in an efficient, sustainable, agile and adaptable manner.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Responsible for installation, maintenance, upgrade and decommission of application and database software in physical and virtual environments.Manages all Business Intelligence and supporting software deploymentsControls and optimizes database access and allocates/re-allocates database resources for optimum configuration, database performance and cost. Assists in performing a variety of critical database functions such as review, evaluation, design, implementation and maintenance.Determines database structural requirements by analyzing client operations, applications, and programming; reviewing objectives with clients; evaluates current systems.Develops database solutions by designing proposed systems, defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, security, back-up, and recovery specificationsManages ETL jobs and systems that support the Data Warehouse systems.Designs, develops and implements ELT/ELT jobs to meet current and future business data needsDevelops and implements migration methods for moving existing data from legacy systems into new solutionsDesigns, builds, optimizes and maintains conceptual, logical and physical data models and flowcharts.Creates, analyzes, and validates detailed functional specificationsInvestigates and resolves complex application and operational issues and improve system performance by conducting tests, troubleshooting and integrating new elements.Monitor and identify performance trends and work to improve processes and procedures.Tests and drives implementation of new technologies to meet current and future business needs of the AIR department, its stakeholders and clienteleAssists data stewards and subject matter experts with ensuring data integrity, testing of system changes, and analyzing data flows for process improvement opportunities.Ensure data solutions are built for performance, fault tolerance and securityAssists staff in the creation, management, and troubleshooting of BI Dashboards.Document stakeholder requirements, measure/monitor process efficiency, report project status and assist with communication programs and trainingCross-trains, builds, and maintains skills in adjacent work areas of the workgroup to facilitate team problem solving.Mentors less experienced Database Developer/Administrator IServes as a liaison between various business units and IT to drive the implementation of improvement opportunities by mapping out process changes, defining requirements and scope, and proactively communicating project vision to business leaders, stakeholders, and users.Facilitates design sessions with the implementation team to define solutionsResponsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned, which may include but is not limited to scripting or light programming, automation, and project management for systems- and database-related projects

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of UNIX or Linux is helpfulIn-depth understanding of database design and structure principlesKnowledge of and skills in the following areas preferred; SQL Server Database Administration, Database Analysis & Design, Physical Disk Storage and Partitioning, Access and Data Security Management, Backup, Restoration and Disaster Recovery, Advanced SQL programming, MS Visual Studio 2017 or newerFamiliarity with reporting, analysis and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, R)Understanding current product trends and technology innovationsExcellent problem solving and analytical skillsKnowledge of Kimball dimensional modeling design concepts and OLAP database designs and implementation strategiesAnalytical, detail oriented, organized, creative thinker and problem solverAbility to respond in a rapid manner to problems and issues related to the RDBMS and the platform environmentAbility to manage a variety of competing priorities and to work productively with colleagues to ensure that goals are attained in a timely mannerAbility to objectively troubleshoot and resolve issues in complex technical environmentsExcellent organizational and analytical skills, good interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal English communications skillsAbility to assume responsibility for independent actionAbility to develop, understand and follow standard operating proceduresAbility to convey technical or complex information to others in non-technical terms

PHYSICAL ABILITES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

    Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipmentInterface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the positionWork is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least 3 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experienceAt least 3 years of experience in a data architecture, data analysis or data management roleAt least 3 years of experience developing, installing, configuring and administering large relational database platforms including Microsoft SQL Server 2016 and newerAt least 3 years of experience with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), Reporting Services (SSRS) and Integration Services (SSIS)At least 3 years hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience
