The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education. All tenure-track candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, assist in curriculum development, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment.

Position Summary

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Spelman College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Cultural Anthropology to begin in August 2020. We are seeking a cultural anthropologist who specializes in Food Studies. We are seeking a candidate whose scholarship and teaching reflects an intersectional methodological and theoretical lens. A geographical specialization in the United States is preferred. Sub-areas of specialization that are of interest may include (but are not limited to): medical anthropology, global public health, consumption, sustainability, nutrition, food security, food access, food systems, and food policy. Spelman College is a teaching-intensive institution with a teaching load of three courses per semester. We are seeking a colleague who can teach core courses in Anthropology such as Ethnographic Methods and Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, as well as Food and Culture, Food and the City, Medical Anthropology, and other anthropology elective courses in their area of specialization that contribute to our department’s course offerings. The candidate will also be expected to serve as a reader on students’ Senior Theses, which is a capstone requirement for all majors.

The person who assumes this position will be expected to engage with other faculty on community-based research and projects in Food Studies and serve as the co-director of the Food Studies program and minor (https://www.spelman.edu/academics/majors-and-programs/food-studies-program). The ideal candidate should be willing to work closely with students at a liberal arts college and possess a demonstrated interest and/or experience with interdisciplinary problem-posing that is grounded in the discipline of anthropology. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who have experience teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. Candidates should describe in their cover letter how their teaching would contribute to the Sociology and Anthropology Department.

Qualifications

Persons currently holding a Ph.D. in Anthropology are preferred. “ABD” candidates in Anthropology will be considered as long as the degree will be conferred by the time of hire. Previous experience teaching courses in anthropology is required.
