Job FieldThe Department of French in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) in Francophone studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on July 1, 2020, or shortly thereafter, and end on June 30, 2023.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate must have expertise in the area of Caribbean and African Literatures (both the Maghreb and sub-Saharan literature). Candidates must also have extensive knowledge of contemporary literary, postcolonial, and cultural theories. An interest in the cinema of these regions would be an asset, as would knowledge of one of the languages spoken in these regions. Duties may include teaching at both the Graduate and Undergraduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Applicants must:

• Have a PhD in Francophone studies or a related field at the time of appointment or shortly thereafter;
• Have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, which will be evidenced by publications in top-ranked and field relevant academic journals, or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences and strong endorsements by referees of high standing;
• Have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, which will be provided through strong endorsements by referees, teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application.
• Have native or near-native French proficiency as well as a strong knowledge of English.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
