Job description

DepartmentThe Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to lead/design research projects to determine the role of C9orf72 haploinsufficiency in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.




CampusCandidates require a Ph.D. with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the fields of biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology. Candidates must have 6 years' experience designing, planning and executing experiments and research, including demonstrated experience coordinating collaborative projects and directing the workflow of others. They must have experience preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals, and preparing research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies. Previous experience working with mouse primary motor neurons, transgenic mouse models of adult-onset neurodegenerative disease (behavior and histology) and analysis of ALS autopsy tissue is a must.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, with strong organizational and problem solving skills, and demonstrate the ability to work independently, but also have strong interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work positively with others.

KEY DUTIES

•Designing, planning and executing research projects.
•Contributing directly to research programs by assisting with experiments focused on understanding the role of C9orf72 haploinsufficiency in ALS.
•Performing molecular biology and imaging assays including but not limited to: cloning, PCR, electrophoretic analysis, protein and enzyme assays, and fluorescence microscopy, mouse brain and spinal cord dissection, immunohistochemistry, primary neuronal culture.
•Reading published papers relevant to the experiments being performed and adapting procedures accordingly.
•Co-ordinating research efforts with collaborators and their teams.
•Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals.
•Presenting findings to research peers and collaborators.
•Assisting with research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies.
•Co-ordinating biosafety processes and lab maintenance, including inventories, equipment repairs, ordering, and shipping reagents, etc.
•Establishing standard operating protocols and procedures for the laboratory.

Beyond these responsibilities, the individual may be expected to participate in the research supervision of two or more students or other trainees. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of the lab.
