General Overview:

The Sr. Director, Development Miller School of Medicine Neurosciences will oversee fund raising for the neurosciences at the Miller School of Medicine. The neuroscience team will consist of the Senior Director of Development, a Director of Development and a Manager of Donor Relations. The Senior Director will work with the appropriate faculty leadership in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery to secure major and principal gifts in support of the neurosciences, one of the Miller School’s campaign priority areas.

Essential Responsibilities:

The Senior Development Director’s leadership, managerial, administrative and operational responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and continually grow a personal, in-depth knowledge of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Neurology as well as all neuroscience programs and research priorities at the Miller School. Develop and continually grow effective working relationships with the Chairman of both departments.
  • Develop and drive a strategic fundraising strategy for this Pillar, identified as a campaign priority, in conjunction with medical and Development leadership. Collaborate with Chairmen to identify and develop bold ideas as well as to identify the most appropriate bridging platforms supporting this area.
  • Lead, direct, and oversee the work of the Director of Development, Neurosciences, ensuring it effectively contributes to the attainment of team goals, and ensures both Chairmen and their Departments receive appropriate coverage.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff and volunteers, as appropriate, to identify potential grateful patients and other prospective donors and funding sources and to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Solicit major and principal gifts from grateful patients, grateful patient families and other prospects in support of faculty, programs, and research.
  • Ensure regular communications and stewardship with donors, including proper acknowledgement of gifts and pledge payments, reporting as needed, and the provision of information in accordance with the Division’s policies and established procedures.
  • Assist donors, prospects and other select individuals with appointments, scheduling and other necessary facilitation through clinical encounters at UHealth.
  • Develop and implement an annual work plan with measurable objectives and courses of action for all relevant activities during the year.
  • Maintain communications with colleagues in medical departments, other schools and central development to ensure effective collaborations and synergy in achieving the university’s key fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Document all contacts, communications, visits, and proposals in RE and other appropriate donor files.
  • Where appropriate and required, manage support staff, freelance, temporary employees and related volunteer organizations, as determined by senior management.
  • Provide professional fundraising services and support to other divisions, departments, and centers as required and directed.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and minimum 7 years of demonstrated successful experience in major gift fundraising and fundraising management, preferably in higher education or health care. Outstanding oral and written communication skills are necessary along with the ability to be highly organized, creative, energetic, and assertive and exhibit the independent judgment and personal integrity necessary to carry out a senior management role in fundraising. A team-oriented approach to colleagues and a proven ability to manage people in a positive and constructive environment as well as the ability to establish effective working relationships with senior medical leadership are essential.

Measures of Success:

Demonstrate success in reaching and significant and continuous progress toward establishing and attaining ever-increasing campaign or multi-year project goals, both individually and for the Neurosciences team. Dollar goals for “dollars of proposals submitted” and “dollars of proposals raised” will be established with supervisor. Reach individual and team annual goals for “number of proposals submitted” and “number of proposals funded”. Numbers established with supervisor. Reach individual and team goals for “face-to-face visits” and “impact visits.” Goals established with supervisor. Manage appropriate prospect portfolio, continually working throughout the year with assigned Senior Portfolio Optimization Analyst to fine tune portfolio. Demonstrate collaboration with other fundraisers by submitting narrative demonstrating such activities at the end of each fiscal year. Demonstrate personal development of leadership traits and behaviors, as well as a professional competency in accordance with annual Divisional goal setting guidelines.
