Therefore, the candidate should possess either significant experience in teaching or demonstrate the potential to become an effective teacher. The Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising at the University of Illinois is one of the best departments in the world, nested in one of the best universities in the world. We have outstanding collaborative relationships with Engineering, Psychology, Communications, the School of Information Sciences, Business, and beyond. We have award-winning faculty and students actively engaged in interdisciplinary work. The program has many industry partners, a virtual reality lab, psychophysiology lab, a data science lab, and additional flexible research labs; the University has a Research Park with dozens of entrepreneurial startups, known as the “Silicon Valley of the Prairie.” Our proximity to Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis, all major media markets and technology communities, is almost as great as the low cost of living, short commutes, and delightful, supportive colleagues in Champaign-Urbana.

A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent degree in Mass Communication, Advertising, Communication, Marketing, or a closely related field is required. Candidates must have an established record of scholarly research, teaching and advising, and service appropriate to their current rank that exceeds the criteria for holding an appointment with indefinite tenure in the Department of Advertising at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Preference will be given to candidates with at least 3-5 years post-graduate experience.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by October 15th, 2019. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The review will continue until the position has been filled. For further information regarding application procedures, including requests for confidentiality of the application, please contact Jane Dowler [email protected] or 217-333-2351.

The full-time position will begin on August 16, 2020. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Named after the “Father of Advertising Education”, the Charles H. Sandage Department is the earliest university department focusing on advertising education in the country and a global leader in advertising research. Consistent with Sandage’s vision of advertising being a “fundamental economic and social institution,” the Department strives to shape the future of advertising by placing more emphasis on the “why” than on the “how” of advertising activities in broader social contexts.

The faculty members in the Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising are highly interdisciplinary. They conduct theory-driven research not only on advertising but also on its social and behavioral impacts and publish in flagship journals in a variety of fields such as advertising, public relations, communication, psychology, marketing, and information and computer sciences.
