Job Description

This is a tenure track, Assistant Professor, Counseling Psychology in the Combined Counseling/School Psychology PhD program, academic year position based in Flagstaff, Arizona in the Department of Educational Psychology. The appointment will begin August 2020.

The Department of Educational Psychology is located within the College of Education and offers a PhD in Combined Counseling/School Psychology, EdS in School Psychology, Master’s degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counseling-School Counseling, Counseling-Student Affairs, and Human Relations. The Department of Educational Psychology has statewide locations that also offer accredited programs. The Department of Educational Psychology (EPS) is seeking to fill an Assistant Professor position at our Flagstaff Mountain Campus beginning August 2020. The EPS Department seeks candidates with (1) experience in innovative instructional methodology, (2) a current or potential for a solid research agenda, as evidenced by publications, ongoing research, and potential for research funding, (3) ability and strong interest in working with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds, including rural and Southwest communities, and (4) a strong commitment to training and mentoring to build professional psychologist competencies. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track faculty line, with the opportunity for summer course teaching.

Responsibilities:

1. Teach graduate counseling psychology classes (including practicum and internship) for the EPS programs
2. Teach in-person, with some blended or online courses to students in Flagstaff and to extended campus sites
3. Maintain an active research agenda
4. Prepare and manage grants
5. Assist in recruiting, retaining, and advising EPS masters and doctoral students
6. Direct graduate student research and serve on dissertation committees
7. Fulfill service responsibilities to the department, college, university, and the profession
8. Work collaboratively with health service agencies to coordinate practicum and internship experiences for counseling psychology students

Minimum Qualifications

1. Earned Doctorate by date of hire in Counseling Psychology or Combined Counseling/School Psychology, or in an area of Applied Psychology
2. College teaching experience (can include college teaching as a graduate assistant)
3. Research and/or grant experience (can include experience as a research assistant)
4. Experience in the field of Counseling and/or Psychology, with background/experience in health service agencies or schools
5. Licensed/certified or eligible for licensure/certification as a Psychologist in Arizona

Preferred Qualifications

1. Three or more years of relevant graduate level teaching experience in the area of counseling and/or psychology, including, but not limited to; theories of counseling, multicultural counseling, supervising practicum and internships, counseling techniques, and counseling processes
2. Ability/experience or strong interest in recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students
3. Evidence of scholarly productivity and/or ability to maintain an active research agenda
4. A record of success in seeking, securing, and managing grant support for research projects
5. Ability/experience working with graduate students on research projects, presentations, and publications
6. Ability or strong interest in working with distance technologies, such as web-based instruction
7. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with department chairs, other program directors/coordinators, faculty, staff, students, and associated members of the professional community
8. Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds, including rural and Southwestern US populations
9. Graduate of, or experience in an APA-accredited Doctoral Program
10. Evidence of a strong psychologist identity, and an active involvement in related professional associations
11. Experience in networking/collaborating with health service agencies

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

Salary

$58,000 - $62,000 – Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
