The English Department at Coe College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor/ACM Mellon Faculty Fellow appointment in twentieth- and twenty-first-century hemispheric, transnational, or ethnic American literature to begin in August 2020.

We seek candidates committed to undergraduate teaching who can extend our department’s support for global and interdisciplinary studies and contribute to efforts to foster inclusion and access for underrepresented groups. The successful candidate will design and teach courses ranging from introductory literature courses and first-year seminars to upper-level courses and seminars. In addition, there are opportunities to teach in interdisciplinary programs, such as Social and Criminal Justice, the Center for Health and Society, Environmental Studies, International Studies, American Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies.

Interests in such areas as Latinx literatures, border studies, postcolonial studies and/or indigenous literatures are especially welcome. As a Fellow in the Mellon Faculty Fellows Program for a Diverse Professoriate, the hire will teach half-time (three courses a year) for the first two years to advance their research agenda and become familiar with teaching and research at a liberal arts college; after two years, the position will be a full-time load (six courses a year). In addition, Fellows are offered mentoring opportunities through regular meetings with the ACM Mellon cohort. Candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education are especially encouraged to apply.



  • Ph.D. in English or a related field by start date (August 2020)
  • Evidence of strong undergraduate teaching
  • Successful completion of a background check in accordance with Coe College policy.
