The Department of Cell Biology at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Associate to join the lab of Dr. Karen Hirschi to study the development of the fetal bone marrow niche.
The work in the laboratory integrates stem cell and molecular biology with mouse genetic and genomic approaches. Of particular interest, will be investigating the mechanisms by which fetal bone marrow is vascularized, and how vascular endothelial cells support HSC in this niche. We will also be using human pluripotent stem cells to generate hemogenic endothelial cells and HSC in culture to integrate into an engineered bone marrow construct. The role of the person holding this position also includes supervision of undergraduate students, as well as the writing of manuscripts.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in a biological field, plus at least five years of post-doctoral training in vascular biology, and demonstrate a relevant publication record in top ranked journals and participation in national/international scientific conferences. The successful candidate will be expected to master cutting edge technology in cellular imaging such as confocal and high resolution microscopy, in vitro culture of vascular cells and in vivo models of vascular development and pathophysiology. Knowledge of cell cycle regulation, arteriovenous differentiation and mechanisms controlling endothelial cell behavior are required for this position. Finally, the candidate should have demonstrated success in securing extramural funding for research grants.
Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
This is a one-year appointment; however, appointment may be renewed for an additional two, one-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
