This is an hourly working supervisory position assisting the Laboratory Animal Facilities Supervisor in managing animal husbandry operations in AAALAC accredited animal facilities utilizing multiple laboratory and agricultural animals in ABSL-1 and ABSL-2 environments. Individual will perform and supervise the daily care and husbandry of animals including feeding, watering, sanitation, animal health surveillance, enrichment and environmental monitoring following established schedules, procedures and guidelines. Ensures animals and the vivarium are appropriately maintained in accordance with USDA Animal Welfare regulations, the Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals and institutional policies.

Job will be assisting facility supervisor with personnel management duties including scheduling work assignments, training and directing employees. Reports to the Laboratory Animal Facilities Supervisor of the Animal Dairy Sciences Rodent Facility and serves as the area supervisor during their absence. Directs and performs sanitation duties such as cleaning and sanitization of cages, animal rooms, primary enclosures and ancillary equipment. Ensures all employees follow all established procedures while husbanding animals and performing sanitization tasks including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintains, operates and supervises the use of animal care and ancillary equipment. Supervises and participates in the receiving, health assessment, handling, identification and transport of animals. Establishes and ensures the appropriate documentation and maintenance of essential facility records.

Performs animal facility orientations and trains staff in animal resources policies and procedures. Monitors and maintains operational supplies inventory and equipment. Completes database management of animal orders, census, billing and animal identification. Participates in pre-study meetings as required and provides assistance to animal facility users. Coordinates the animal facilities preventative maintenance and integrated pest management program. Assist with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) development and assures employees are properly trained and all work performed is in accordance with established SOP’s. Performs other assigned duties at the direction of the Laboratory Animal Facilities Supervisor.

Participation in UGA’s Occupational Health & Safety Program and may include vaccinations, spirometry and respirator fit testing. Candidate will participate in on-going training and continuing education programs. Incumbent will work and perform emergency on-call duties as assigned; and work rotating weekends and holidays as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

The ideal applicant will have the ability to independently perform and supervise employees in an animal research vivarium utilizing multiple laboratory animal species including agricultural species strictly adhering to applicable regulatory statutes and institutional policies. Applicants will have the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly utilizing good verbal and written skills. Good leadership skills are essential, as well as the ability to plan, establish, and supervise employees in the applicable standard operating procedures relating to animal care and safety practices. Have the ability to define work priorities, allocate labor and equipment resources and evaluate employee work progress. This is a working supervisor position and the job requires excellent organizational skills establishing, adjusting and fulfilling all job responsibilities to assure accurate completion of work while efficiently using resources. The ideal candidate will be able to maximize performance, foster teamwork and facilitate the daily work schedules of subordinates in order to meet all facility objectives. Job has excellent observational skills. Qualified applicants will be skilled in computer programs such as Word & Excel.

Physical Demands

Withstand sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and lifting 50 pounds. Work sometimes under demanding conditions (high humidity, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Work environment involves some exposure to biohazards and/or physical risks, following established safety procedures. Job may wear PPE (protective clothing, safety glasses, face shields, steel toed safety shoes/boots, respirators, gloves, etc.) and stand on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time. Candidate can restrain, handle, and treat multiple species of animals including; large hoof stock such as horses, dairy cattle and swine in relatively confined spaces. Work may be physically demanding involving the transport, relocation and positioning of animal care and auxiliary equipment. This position will participate in the research occupational health and safety program which may include specific vaccinations before entering restricted facilities.
