Department Chair of Communication

Job description

The Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences seeks an accomplished leader to serve as the Chair for the Department of Communication. The Chair must be able to articulate a clear vision for moving the Department forward, following the direction laid out in the College’s Five-Year Strategic Plan and in the University’s stated Mission and Vision. The Department has recently revised its undergraduate curriculum, is eager to grow the number of majors, and anticipates developing a master’s degree in the next five years. The program has a significant role in the general education curriculum, which has to be balanced with the needs of the Communication major.

The successful candidate will demonstrate: an ability to inspire and support faculty excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and creative activity; a commitment to student success through high-impact practices and quality programs; a commitment to collaboration, interdisciplinary, and collegial shared governance;

Department chairs in the College are expected to teach regularly in their departments, to supervise student internships, and to sponsor undergraduate research projects. Area of disciplinary expertise is open, with current curricular foci in communication studies, journalism, public relations, and mass communication.

This is a full-time (12-month) tenure-track, primarily administrative faculty position reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, with duties to begin July 1, 2020. Salary is competitive, and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned terminal degree in a discipline represented in the department
  • Eligible for appointment as Full Professor
  • Experience teaching in a comprehensive research university
  • Related experience in academic administration (program director, associate chair, etc.)
  • Experience in program development, student recruitment, and assessment
  • Experience in faculty recruitment, development, and mentoring
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching at a research-intensive (R1) institution
  • Experience building new degree programs, both undergraduate and graduate
  • Success in securing external grants
  • Experience in budget and personnel management
