Job Description

The Department of Theater at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Voice and Acting at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin September 1, 2020.

We are seeking a person with a passion and vision for undergraduate education to teach Voice and Acting classes in our B.A. program. The ideal candidate will demonstrate rigor and excellence in their work, as they join a dynamic team of faculty and staff in a department of about 150 theater majors and a growing minor. The department also has MFA programs in Design, Directing, and Dramaturgy, and the nation’s first certificate in Multicultural Theater Practice.

In addition to teaching Voice and Acting classes, the candidate will mentor MFA students in their teaching, take an active role in recruitment, and assist with vocal coaching on productions. Ideally, the candidate will also bring their own unique expertise or specialty to expand our program, with some potential areas of interest being LGBTQIA+ theater, musical theater, or innovative classes for non-majors. Participation in departmental and university service is also a responsibility.

Requirements

  • MFA in Acting or related field by time of appointment
  • Certification in a recognized Voice pedagogy (such as Fitzmaurice, Laban, Lessac, Linklater, etc.)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching voice and acting at the college level
  • Record of professional achievement as a theater practitioner at the regional or national level
  • Evidence of ongoing creative or professional achievement
  • An ability to collaborate and work with colleagues and students across disciplines
