Lab Safety Supervisor (Assistant Supervisor 3)

Summary/Position Description:

The Division of Facilities, Planning, and Operations at Rowan University (RU) is a growing enterprise. The Division’s mission is to create and sustain a vibrant, safe, supportive environment at RU’s campuses. The Division is dedicated to providing leadership in facilities development and management, campus planning, and business operations. This division is led by the Vice President of Facilities, Planning, and Operations.

The Department of Facilities Operations is a part of the Division of Facilities, Planning and Operations. Through collaboration and partnership with the rest of the Division of Facilities, Planning and Operations and campus community, this Department leads the overall management of facilities operations including Trades Staff, Central Plant Operations, Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), and Custodial Operations.

Under the limited supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Operations, the Director of Environmental Health and Safety directs and manages the overall operation of the EHS department. The Lab Safety Supervisor reports directly to the Director. The Lab Safety Supervisor (Assistant Supervisor 3) is primarily responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the university's labs and studio spaces. This includes developing safety protocols for procedures, materials, and instrumentation, providing periodic safety training for faculty, staff, and students, overseeing disposal of chemical and hazardous waste, and coordinating with the college's technical staff as well as Facilities. The primary function of the supervisor is to provide leadership and expertise in the development, administration, and maintenance of programs for laboratory safety, with emphasis in chemical safety. S/he will develop, implement, and manage policies, procedures, and programs that promote a safe, responsible, healthful, and compliant work environment for all faculty, staff, and students. S/he will provide service, technical support and compliance guidance to the University. S/he may serve as the EHS representative to several lab safety committees such as the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, Lab Safety Committee, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the University’s point person for lab safety and acts as the Chemical Hygiene representative for EHS
  • Maintains the Chemical Hygiene Plan, updates program as needed and ensures accessible to all
  • Coordinates with research and teaching faculty, along with staff, to develop and administer safety and chemical hygiene protocols for all labs and studio spaces
  • Conducts periodic training for faculty, staff, and students regarding safety practices
  • Conducts and manages all periodic routine inspections of laboratories and studios to ensure that they comply with regulations. Manages EHS lab inspection programs by tracking/identifying key metrics or identified high risks
  • Ensures that safety materials are available and protocols followed
  • Participates on lab safety committee(s) of faculty, staff and EHS personnel to assess policies and procedures and to develop a good safety culture
  • Ensure that hazardous chemicals are disposed of properly and performs spot checks or audits. Manages program of identifying key metrics or identified risks
  • Works with Facilities and departmental staff and managers to develop protocols for material handling and waste removal.
  • Works with Facilities and directs work to ensure that campus or building areas follow OSHA/PEOSH and all other applicable EHS related regulations
  • Assists or coordinates documenting processes, usage, and requirements for accreditation reports and funding agency surveys.
  • Oversees compliance with Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) where applicable
  • Develops or maintains RU EHS training programs for Research Safety with regard to chemical issues and laboratory safety
  • Directs inspections of fume hood, emergency showers and eyewashes and other EHS related equipment (maintains associated documentation)
  • Supports technical resolution for facility renovation and projects related to lab working areas, including design review
  • Leads or manages the annual chemical inventory for all university laboratory or research areas to ensure updates entered or maintained in RU’s RTK or Hazcom compliance software data bases; audits for compliance and submits and manages RU Hazcom or Right to Know compliance required by NJ Dept. of Health/PEOSH
  • Possible duties may involve maintaining or supporting university incident reporting system, required incident record-keeping documentations (incident reports, OSHA logs, etc.) and ensuring compliance with applicable record-keeping regulations.
  • Other EHS duties as assigned including at other campuses or locations.
  • Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in a lab science, chemistry, biology, safety, industrial hygiene, or closely related field.
  • Experience & Qualifications:

  • 2 or more years of required experience in a lab or research setting dealing with safety, materials handling and compliance issues. Direct experience with coordinating or leading EHS activities or auditing for compliance. (4 or more years of experience preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical and safety protocols
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner, involving multiple stakeholders, and develop and implement processes.
  • Excellent communication and management skills.
  • Experience in laboratory safety and hazardous materials response or related activities.
  • Certification in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, or closely related field preferred.
  • EHS audit or inspection experience required.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of customers; undergraduate students to faculty to University level committees.
  • Demonstrated program development experience and being able to anticipate concerns before they become obstacles. Vision of multiple intertwined processes from cradle-to-grave.
  • Must possess demonstrated skill with Microsoft Suite products, at a minimum, Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Familiarity with work order systems, and training documentation or audit data bases.
  • EHS knowledge in the laboratory and research setting
