The Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy at the University of California, Irvine is searching for an Assistant Professor of Teaching in spatial analysis and research methods. The applicant should have a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning, Public Policy, or a closely related field such as Geography, Public Health, or Environmental Sciences. Applicants must have expertise in geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis. The successful candidate will support and expand the department's curriculum and activities related to spatial analysis, emerging GIS technologies, and applied planning and policy research. In addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate GIS courses, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in research design and statistical analysis. We seek experience in the following areas:

  • Using modern instructional technologies, particularly those related to GIS and spatial analysis;
  • Teaching large undergraduate classes and applying evidence-based teaching practices including active learning or course-based research experiences;
  • Developing effective teaching strategies for diverse student populations.

    Professors of Teaching are full members of the Academic Senate and are eligible for merit advancement with commensurate pay increases. The successful applicant will teach seven courses annually, spread over three quarters (e.g., a 2-3-2 load). Advancement requires excellence in teaching, as well as externally recognized scholarly contributions to pedagogy and/or to the underlying discipline that supports teaching excellence. Within eight years (or less), the jobholder will be evaluated for Security of Employment, which has the permanence of a tenured position.

    The Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy offers five vibrant academic programs including a Ph.D. in Urban and Environmental Planning and Policy, a PAB-accredited Master of Urban and Regional Planning, a Master of Public Policy, and two undergraduate programs—a B.A. in Urban Studies and a joint B.A. in Environmental Science and Policy with Earth System Sciences. The department has 20 full-time and 16 affiliated faculty members, and several adjunct instructors who are active in departmental and campus-wide research, education, and outreach efforts, including the Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation, the UCI Water Initiative, and the Institute of Transportation Studies. UC Irvine, with over 30,000 students, is ranked among the nation's best universities, public and private.
