Dean serves as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Academic Officer of the School/College and reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. He or she provides direction and vision for the School, integrating all aspects of its resources and aspirations into a coherent operational framework.Principal Responsibilities:
In more specific terms, his or her responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:reviewing faculty recommendations for the appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure of faculty and making independent recommendations to the VPAA;
reviewing faculty recommendations for all applicants for sabbaticals and making independent recommendations to the VPAA;
recommending the establishment of new or replacement faculty lines;
encouraging professional development of faculty as artists, teachers and colleagues;
working with faculty to refine the programs and curricula across the School in accordance with an overall vision of how we might best serve our students;
overseeing the development and implementation of new academic programs;
assuming responsibility for program accreditation, where applicable;
supervising of the School's administrative staff and all administrative operations of the School;
reviewing of class schedules and faculty workload assignments to ensure they meet student needs;
increasing the efficient use of the School's budgetary resources through effective management;
managing the School's budget and credit allocation for faculty workload;
working with others across the campus to promote the arts as an essential part of the education of all undergraduate students and to more fully integrate the education of students across the campus with the activities of the Tilles Center;
forging programmatic connections with other academic units;
coordinating efforts with Admissions and other offices to enroll and retain through graduation increased numbers of qualified students;
providing the creative leadership necessary to further enhance its role and position as a regional force in the study and teaching of the arts;
raising external funds to support faculty, programs, facilities and students;
leading strategic planning for the School and allocating resources consistent with the plan developed; and
ensuring the implementation and effective application of student learning outcomes data.
Minimum qualification- an earned doctorate or terminal degree in the appropriate professional discipline;
Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience:
College-level teaching experience and a record of achievement in academic administration at the level of department chair or dean;
A documented record of scholarship or activity commensurate with the represented discipline is expected;
Extensive knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of higher education, institutional effectiveness, assessment of student learning outcomes, educational research and accreditation standards, and basic knowledge of instructional technology and academic computing systems;
The ability to work professionally and confidentially with the University community and the public.
Materials and Equipment:
Works with desktop and laptop computers and related software, servers, printers and other peripheral equipment in day-to-day operations.
