This position serves as a primary resource for administrative, teaching and research technologies for the Miami Herbert Business School (MHBS). This position will support 21st century learning and business strategies for the school. The position will coordinate the development and delivery of technology solutions, as well as consult on best practices for instructional and non-instructional use. The position will work with faculty and staff to understand technology needs, coordinate and pilot programs to investigate new technologies and functionalities that promote technology adoption and training that works to meet school’s needs. Working in concert with other departments, the University Central IT office and Senior Leadership the position will provide leadership and guidance in the selection and adoption of various technologies and strategies to enhance physical and virtual classroom environments and facilitate the use of technologies in business and office settings to enhance productivity. The Director facilitates the training and support for administrative, teaching, and learning technologies. This position is a key driver for continuous improvement and technology innovation. The ideal candidate will combine strong leadership skills, an understanding of working with diverse teams, hands-on technical capabilities, a knack for effectively managing technology to meet academic and business goals and the ability to manage a large workload, while producing quality work in a fast-pace environment with interruptions and deadlines. The Director should have a strong background in software development and be comfortable working closely with the technical and client sides of product development.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides planning, budgeting, leadership and supervision to the IT department, communicates current and projected needs, requirements and options in the college budgeting process, and recommends acquisitions and updates;
  • Coordinates long-range planning activities for the technology infrastructure of the college, including administrative/student information systems, computer networks, personal computers, video systems, and voice communication systems;
  • Evaluates and recommends vendor contracts for hardware, software, and technology related services as needed; negotiate contracts for the acquisition and maintenance of all systems hardware, software, and telecommunications
  • Provides support and guidance in the acquisition and utilization of key technology within the school
  • Establishes standards for desktop computing, user support services and training;
  • Directs IT support services and ensures a prompt, efficient, effective, and client friendly technical support operation;
  • Maintain a proactive institutional approach to ensuring quality and value of goods and services received

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master’s degree in related field preferred. Any and all degree(s) must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Experience:

Minimum 7 years of relevant information technology leadership experience and proven success in managing information technology resources and services, preferably in an educational environment.

    Expertise in information security frameworks and standards, best-practice policies and procedures, tools and techniques.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for managing and implementing change.
  • Experience overseeing multifaceted systems and leveraging overall system resources to deliver the optimum level of service in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Creative ability and experience in addressing technological, organizational and budget challenges.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, specifically with respect to consensus building, presentation of ideas and plans, and management.
  • Personnel and budget management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a service orientation.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals in a tactful, productive manner.
  • Experience in complex project management.
  • Experience with Linux/Windows operating systems.
  • Proven track record of timely project completion and budget fidelity.

Department Specific Functions

50% Responsibility for Technology Department Operations and Personnel

  • Plans, develops, administers and coordinates all functions and services of the Information Technology department of MHBS
  • Supports a team based, customer service atmosphere with cohesion among the staff
  • Coordinates with MHBS Faculty and Senior Leadership in development and implementation of Information Technology strategic plan
  • Serves as liaison between MHBS Faculty/Staff and University of Miami Information Technology
  • Supervises the performance management of all assigned staff, including making decisions as they pertain to hiring, training, evaluation, promotion, and termination
  • Monitors project prioritization, active projects, and the development of dashboard and reporting mechanisms
  • Seeks ways to improve operations, and oversees the preparation of productivity reports
  • Establishes departmental goals and objectives, identifies areas of improvement, and implements action plans
  • Develops annual budget in conjunction with Executive Director of Finance

30% Management of technology support functions

  • Manages network user accounts including policies, restrictions, and settings
  • Manages all systems required to support MHBS workstations including print servers, domain servers, storage systems, backup systems, databases, and remote access systems
  • Installs, troubleshoots and repairs equipment
  • Responsible for upgrades to network infrastructure as needed
  • Provides technical assistance to faculty and staff
  • Serves as point of contact for existing or prospective hardware or software purchases.
  • Utilizes intrusion detection system, network management software and test equipment to analyze and correct network issues
  • Maintains inventory of hardware, software and licensing documentation
  • Coordinates support for MHBS access to centrally supported enterprise systems

15% Lead technology services; disaster preparatory and recovery plans/procedures, Help Desk management, Audio Visual/event support

  • Collaborates with University level IT to best utilize services and shared support
  • Tests and evaluates technology for use/improvement. Provides status reports and recommendations to Senior Leadership.
  • Develops and revises safety and security plans for the School to ensure business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Insures availability of IT services and network resources through onsite and offsite resources
  • Implements new technologies to enhance the use of Information Technology by MHBS faculty, staff, and students
  • Assesses existing and new technologies to drive productivity, profitability and competitive advantage throughout the school, including enrollment management, marketing and financial processes.
  • Responsible for monitoring, managing and upgrading offsite resources
  • Plans and organizes audiovisual services provided to the college; design technical and specialized audiovisual systems in response to faculty, student and staff requirements; identify, evaluate and recommend emerging media equipment, systems, programs, applications, technologies, methodologies and uses.
  • Oversees classroom technology; works in collaboration with faculty to identify technology needs within the classroom and with Executive Director, Finance to budget for new acquisitions/refresh
  • Supports team in managing help desk and client support ticketing and processes across the school.
  • Meets with users and stakeholders as needed to understand their applications needs and works in conjunction with the IT team to develop project specifications, prioritizing requests as needed.
  • Analyzes complex business needs presented by the School user community and recommends technical solutions.
