Boston College, a Jesuit, Catholic university located about six miles from downtown Boston and enrolling 9,377 undergraduate and 4,730 graduate and professional students, seeks a scholar-teacher to be the founding Executive Director for the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society. This initiative is a key element in Boston College’s plan to enhance its research profile, foster greater integration among STEM disciplines, the humanities, the social sciences, and the professional schools, and thereby advance the common good of society. Toward this end, the Schiller Institute will establish interdisciplinary collaborative academic and research programs to address critical global problems in the areas of energy, health, and the environment.

The Institute’s programs will expand the University’s interdisciplinary science-related academic efforts through the creation of a human-centered engineering program within the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences and increased support for integrated teaching and research across disciplines in the natural and applied sciences, engineering, the social sciences, and the humanities.

The Executive Director for the Institute will report to Boston College’s Provost and Dean of Faculties and will serve as a key member of the Provost’s leadership team. S/he will provide the leadership necessary to ensure the Institute meets a wide variety of institutional priorities, while leading the Institute and partnering with the Deans and department chairs across campus in the identification of, and hiring for, faculty positions associated with the Institute.

Essential qualifications include eligibility for tenure in one of Boston College’s academic departments. S/he will have demonstrated success leading a substantial unit that includes research, teaching, programmatic, and financial responsibilities as well as success working within a major university or similarly complex organization. S/he will be able to represent the Institute within the larger Boston College community, including donors and alumni. S/he will be prepared to promote the University’s mission of integrating research excellence with a foundational commitment to formative liberal arts education.
