Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Division of Student Affairs is a student centered service environment where students are encouraged to be engaged as citizens through enriching their personal and professional development in a diverse and inclusive student service centered environment. Student Affairs is comprised of multiple departments, each with a specific role. Each office or center provides unique services and programs in order to fulfill the division’s mission “Engage, Empower Enrich.”

Department of Recreation & Wellness (RECWELL), Career & Professional Development (CPD), Dean of Students Office (DOS), Office of Accessibility Resources & Services (OARS), Elliott University Center (EUC), Housing and Residence Life (HRL), Office of Leadership and Service-Learning (OLSL), Office of Intercultural Engagement (OIE), Student Health Services (SHS), Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR), The Counseling Center (CC), Veterans Resource Center (VRC).

Position Summary

The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Student Affairs reports to the Vice Chancellor and is a member of the division’s senior leadership team. The AVC provides strategic direction for the division’s efforts to engage students in the co-curricular environment as a means for enhancing student learning and success.

The AVC provides oversight and guidance for the following departments: Campus Activities and Programs (activities, Greek Life, Student Government), Career and Professional Development, Elliott University Center, Office of Intercultural Engagement, and the Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a master’s degree in higher education administration or other related area, and a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in higher education with at least three of those years directing a department or functional area within Student Affairs.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and CertificatesPreferred Qualifications

A doctorate degree in higher education administration or other related area is strongly preferred.
Candidates should have experience overseeing programs that engage students in the co-curricular environment; a working understanding of related legal and compliance issues; an ability to create and assess new initiatives, and knowledge of the theoretical foundations related to college student development and campus environments.

Candidates should possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a proven record of achieving results in collaboration with others; building successful teams; and mentoring professionals and students. Candidates should also have experience working within diverse campus environments and possess an understanding of how to create culturally inclusive and engaging environments.

-Supervise Directors of Campus Activities and Programs, Career and Professional Development, Elliott University Center, Office of Intercultural Engagement, Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement, and the Co-curricular Initiatives Administrator. Provide leadership for personnel, budgets, operations, and facilities related to these departments.
-Convene team meetings to facilitate collaboration and advancement of shared strategic priorities.

Maintain and develop strong working relationships with faculty, staff and community partners to promote student learning and success.
Engage in ongoing evaluation and assessment of all programs and activities to ensure continuous improvement, alignment with strategic direction, and positive student outcomes.
Contribute to the ongoing review and efforts to create inclusive, engaging and equitable environments for all students and staff.
Represent Vice Chancellor at select meetings and provide leadership for the division in their absence.
Maintain a visible presence on campus by attending student meetings, events and university functions.

    The University's Academic Affairs Division consists of seven academic schools, the College of Arts & Sciences, the Graduate School and the Lloyd International Honors College. The names below are the ones currently in use. In some cases, the names have changed since the academic units were founded. The schools and their dates of establishment are: Graduate School 1921-22;College of Arts & Sciences 1969, Lloyd International Honors College 2005, Joint School of Nanoscience & Nanoengineering 2007, Joseph M. Bryan School of Business & Economics 1969, School of Education 1921, School of Health and Human Sciences 2011, School of Music, Theatre and Dance 2010, and School of Nursing 1966.
