Position Summary

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University is seeking applications from qualified applicants for a clinical-track (Health Program, HP) or tenure-track position in large animal surgery at faculty rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The large animal surgery service is committed to excellence in clinical service, didactic and clinical teaching of professional veterinary students, and resident training. The surgery service is composed of 5 boarded surgeons, one double boarded in ACVECC, one in ACVSMR and three surgery residents. The surgery service is complemented by specialists in multiple areas, including 4 ACVIM faculty that are also board certified in ACVECC and ACVSMR as well as boarded specialists in ACVAA, ACVO, and ACVIM-cardiology. Our facilities include a fully equipped hospital with 24-hour certified technical staff, advanced imaging, the Matilda Wilson Pegasus Critical Care and Isolation Facility and the McPhail Equine Performance Center that is fully equipped for advanced sports medicine (https://cvm.msu.edu/research/endowed-chairs/mcphail-dressage-chair/mcphail-equine-performance-center).

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in clinical service and instruction, didactic and laboratory teaching, research, outreach, and service. Instructional responsibilities include teaching professional veterinary students and veterinarians (residents) in postgraduate training programs related to large animal surgery. Clinical service responsibilities include a hospital assignment of approximately 30-40% for tenure track faculty and 75% for clinical track faculty. Annual clinical service and research assignments are negotiable, depending on the successful candidate's experience, interests and the type of appointment (tenure-track or clinical-track).

The College of Veterinary Medicine is located on the East Lansing campus. The large animal teaching hospital is housed in the Veterinary Medical Center, a state-of-the art facility with recent substantial renovations to the large animal facilities to meet the College’s mission. The facility includes three surgical suites fully equipped with high definition arthroscopy, endoscopy, laparoscopy, ligasure, and a full complement of orthopedic instrumentation (LCP and DCP plates). In addition, state of the art imaging (including CT, MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, ultrasound, digital radiography, over-the-ground endoscopy and fluoroscopy), equine gait analysis, including motion capture system, lameness locator, force plates, EMG and saddle pressure mat are available. The surgery team operates in a highly collaborative environment to practice the highest standard of veterinary medicine with focus on lameness and the equine athlete.

Required Degree

Doctorate -DVM

Minimum Requirements

Applicants for the position must hold a DVM or equivalent degree. Competency in equine surgery and lameness is required. Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, European College of Veterinary Surgeons, or completion of a residency program is preferred.

Excellent communication skills are required in small group as well as large lecture hall settings. The ability to interact with a wide variety of faculty and students in a professional and collegial manner is required. Participation in shared afterhours emergency surgery back-up is required. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Michigan is also required.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with advanced imaging modalities is desired. Residents completing programs in 2019 and 2020 are encouraged to apply.
