General Description / Primary Purpose

The Assistant Dean serves as the Director of the Supporting Our Students (SOS) program and provides coordination of services to referred students. Students can be referred to SOS if they have at-risk mental health, physical health or behavioral health concerns, need additional support on campus, are a survivor of sexual violence, and/or are experiencing something that is impacting their well-being.

The Assistant Dean collaborates with the SOS team to develop intervention strategies, connect the referred student to identified support services and follow-up to assure the appropriate services are being used.
This person is responsible for producing qualitative and quantitative reports demonstrating the effectiveness of the program. This person is also responsible for managing SOS cases using Maxient Software and may serve as a member of the UNF Maxient leadership team.

This position blends the functions of: non-clinical student consultation, coordination of student referrals, documentation of referrals, management of a diverse case load, maintenance of case files, and leadership for addressing factors which contribute to student attrition to improve overall student success.

Individuals referred to SOS have been identified as exhibiting concerning behaviors, so this person plays a key role in student and campus safety. As the director of SOS, the Assistant Dean will work with SOS members including the Director of the Counseling Center, University Police Department, Director of Housing & Residence Life, Ombuds and others to determine the appropriate intervention strategy based on the student’s situation or identified concern. This individual collaborates with SOS members to make decisions regarding mandated actions such as psychological assessments, medical assessment, involuntary separation from the University, behavioral contracts, etc.

The Assistant Dean will work with sensitive and confidential documents including medical records and counseling records daily. This individual may have frequent contact with parents, medical professionals, and police.

The Assistant Dean coordinates outreach and education to the faculty, students and staff, to assist them in identifying and referring students of concern, in distress, and at-risk to the SOS team. This includes serving as a facilitator for the new staff and faculty Crisis Management Workshop and other related workshops. The Assistant Dean may provide support for graduate level interns and student staff working with the SOS program.

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; or a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization and four years of experience directly related to the job functions.

Preference show to applicants who meet the required qualifications and also possess the following:
A master’s degree in counseling, social work, or related field is preferred as well as experience in crisis management

This position requires the ability to analyze and develop resolutions to complex problems, to function as the leader of a team of highly skilled and educated professionals, to work under stress while maintaining composure, to interact with all campus constituencies including deans, faculty students and parents, and to be able to develop a network of campus and community resources.

This position has been designated as a CSA because it involves significant responsibility for student and campus activities and/or responsibility for campus security. As such, any person in this position must report to the University Police Department a crime or an incident that might be a crime that he/she becomes aware of. This position has a reporting requirement because the University believes that responsibility for students, campus activities and/or campus security will make the holder of this position someone members of the University community will see as an authority figure and someone to whom they can seek help. A CSA is not expected to investigate or determine whether a criminal incident actually took place. A CSA’s responsibility is a duty to report. All positions designated as CSAs are required to complete an online or in-person training session.
