The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Engineering at NC State University. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University invites outstanding applicants for a tenure-track Extension Specialist and Assistant Professor in water resiliency engineering. Considering climate variability, expected sea level rise and the increasing probability of major drought and flooding events for the state, the importance of the optimum use and management of water resources will only escalate moving forward, especially with the high-value commodity crops that make up the North Carolina agriculture industry.

The most critical extension program and applied research areas to be addressed by this position will be agricultural irrigation, agricultural drainage water management, and rural water supply issues at the local and watershed scale. Impacts of this program will include optimizing crop yields while protecting environmental quality, protecting rural drinking water, and preparation, response, and recovery from floods and drought. Applied research will be used to direct immediately applicable extension programs for targeted groups including producers, rural residents, and other stakeholders within agricultural watersheds.

The position will interface very closely with active and innovative irrigation and drainage engineering research programs in the department. The successful applicant should also interface with research and extension faculty in the Departments of Crop and Soil Science, Agricultural and Resource Economics, Horticultural Science, Civil Engineering, and the Water Resources Research Institute.

Diversity and inclusiveness are academic imperatives and university goals. Candidates should have a commitment to fostering an environment that is welcoming of all groups.
