The Department of Computer Science in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Eastern Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computer Science to begin September 2020.

Eastern Washington University is a midsize regional, comprehensive institution offering high-quality liberal arts and professional undergraduate and graduate programs in Cheney, Spokane, and elsewhere in Washington State. The Spokane metropolitan area is home to over 400,000 diverse residents and offers great four-season outdoor recreational opportunities and a vibrant arts and cultural community.

The Computer Science department has 12 faculty members and roughly 300 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. In Fall 2020, the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering program will merge into one department with approximately 20 faculty members. This new department will also offer a new state-funded Computer Engineering degree.

In Fall 2020, the Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering programs will move from the main campus in Cheney to a new 140,000-square-foot facility in downtown Spokane's University District. This facility is a public-private partnership with the regional tech industry to create a high-tech hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. It will offer our students and faculty outstanding new opportunities for collaboration with regional industry and other universities. Through their teaching and research, the successful candidate will exploit the creative and intellectual opportunities made possible through these partnerships.

Candidates from all areas of Computer Science will be considered. Candidates should have exceptional potential or a demonstrated record for outstanding research and effective teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including advising of a diverse cadre of undergraduate and graduate students.

Candidates must demonstrate interest, experience and/or ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff and the public.

Conditions of Employment

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

The expected start date for this position is 9/16/2020. Candidates must be available and able to start on 9/16/2010.


Required Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related discipline is required at the time of appointment (9/16/2020);
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in innovative research and scholarly activity;
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching core Computer Science coursework;
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching advanced coursework in Computer Science;
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff and the public.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preference may be given to candidates who offer college-level teaching and/or post-doctoral research experience;
  • Preference may be given to candidates who offer industry experience.
