The College of Arts, Letters, and Education, at Eastern Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education, in the Department of Education to begin mid-September 2020.

The preparation of teachers is central to the mission of the Education Department and the selected individual will work closely with colleagues in all areas of the department.

Our program currently offers the following Early Childhood Education degree options:

  • Early Childhood Education with Special Education Option
  • Early Childhood Special Education Minor
  • M.Ed. in Early Childhood (online program)

We seek an outstanding early childhood educator with successful experience teaching in preschool - third grade settings as well as teaching early childhood education courses at the undergraduate level. Experience in inclusive early childhood education environments is highly desirable. Responsibilities will include teaching courses in early childhood assessment, guiding behavior, curriculum methods, and differentiated instruction for young children. Faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

The candidate selected for this position may be expected to teach online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes according to the needs of the department.

Conditions of Employment

The required start date for this position is 09/16/2020. To be considered eligible for appointment into the position, applicants must be available and able to start in the position no later than 09/16/20.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.



Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree in Early Childhood Education or closely related discipline (or ABD, with doctorate conferred by contract start date).
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience in preschool - third grade settings or the equivalent.
  • Record of ability to foster community relationships and engage in learning collaboratively with students, community partners, staff, and colleagues.
  • Successful college teaching experiences.
  • Experience teaching diverse populations and engaging with diverse communities.
  • Interest, experience and/or ability promoting cultural competency and/or diversity
  • Demonstrated ability to apply developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood (P-3) settings
  • Familiarity with NAEYC competencies for early childhood professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.


Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:

  • Reliability and/or experience with Teaching Strategies Gold
  • Reliability and/or experience with the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS)
  • Familiarity with state Quality Rating and Improvement Systems (QRIS)
  • Expertise in the area of inclusive early childhood education and blended practices
  • 4 or more years of full-time, paid experience in teaching at the K-3 levels in public or private schools.
  • Active participation in local, state, or national early childhood work groups/professional organizations i.e. NAEYC membership
