Career Counselor - Cawley Career Education Center

Requirements

The Career Counselor serves as counselor and educator in order to support the educational mission of the University. S/he supports the mission of the Cawley Career Education Center by conducting career counseling, interview preparation sessions, walk-in consultations, and by developing and managing educational programs for students. The incumbent participates in outreach efforts and programs for the campus community, providing institutional expertise in career decision-making, job search strategies, and student development. Reporting to the Associate Director for Career Education & Counseling, the Career Counselor has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

Direct Service Delivery
  • Counsels undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent alumni on career development and job search issues through individual and small group sessions to facilitate constituents' career development process.
  • Administers and interprets career assessments (such as MBTI, SII/SCI, CISS, and SDS) when appropriate to promote career clarification and increase self-knowledge.
  • Keeps accurate consultation information and provides data to the appropriate staff to ensure the accuracy of consultation data in the Center's records.
  • Maintains awareness of career development needs of under-represented populations, participating in individual and group supervision sessions and sharing information on student issues and career needs in order to improve counseling service.
  • Maintains knowledge of current career development theories, vocational assessment instruments, and career counseling techniques.


Educational Programming & Program Management
  • Creates and facilitate career-related workshops and outreach sessions that cover all facets of the career development process in order to help constituents identify, pursue, and achieve their career goals.
  • Conducts mock interviews and reviews interview tapes with students.
  • Directs or participates in one or more career education initiatives as assigned (such as mock interview preparation, outreach coordination, and handout revisions).


Walk-in Consultations
  • Participates in walk-in sessions to provide assistance to constituents representing all stages of the career development process.
  • Reviews resumes, cover letters, and other materials for students.
  • Guides students on how to use Career Center resources more effectively in order to enhance their understanding of the job market and to facilitate placement in full time and internship positions.


Departmental & Liaison Responsibilities
  • Participates in special events including career fairs, career networking functions, open houses, and employer presentations.
  • Represents Georgetown and center in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards, revises programs to reflect trends, and increases center visibility among professionals in the field.
  • Collaborates and serve as a primary liaison with selected offices, departments, and faculty as assigned to maintain and strengthen on-going relationships and foster new relationships that are critical to the center's success.
  • Communicates results and/or status of liaison assignments to staff on an on-going basis.
  • Serves as a leader of a school-based strategic planning team, developing and participating in outreach programs to constituents as outlined in the Strategic Plan.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to assigned offices and/or student groups, initiating, developing, and managing specific aspects of the center's programming as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Master's degree in counseling, counseling psychology, student personnel administration, higher education administration, or related field
  • 2 - 3 years relevant experience providing career counseling, interpreting vocational assessment instruments, planning and presenting career education workshops, supervising interns, critiquing job documents (resumes, cover letters), and serving on administrative teams
  • Ability to use standard word processing packages (like Microsoft Word) is essential
  • Licensure as a professional counselor or National Certified Counselor designation is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of other software applications (PowerPoint, Excel) to create marketing materials and to record data is preferred
