The Position

The Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Lewis University invites applications for Assistant Professor of Speech-Language Pathology. Preferred areas of expertise include adult language, cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders. Other areas of expertise that incorporate management of adult communication and swallowing issues will be considered.  This is a full-time, tenure track appointment. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Speech-Language Pathology is a developing program that will matriculate its first cohort of students in the summer of 2020 on the Romeoville, IL campus.  The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MSSLP) degree will be conferred upon program completion.   The curriculum will incorporate academic, clinical, and research experiences to ensure that students develop the knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level practice as a speech-language pathologist.  The faculty member who is hired will begin this appointment in August 2020 at the beginning of the 2020-21 academic year. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Developing and teaching didactic academic courses in the curriculum, including undergraduate prerequisite and graduate courses.
  • Developing and executing a line of scholarly research that results in dissemination of knowledge.
  • Developing and managing off-site clinical practica in the community for clinical education of students, scholarly projects and community outreach.
  • Completing service to the program, college, university and our profession.
  • Recording assessment data regarding student achievement at midterm and end of each semester.
  • Participation in departmental meetings, graduation ceremonies, and other meetings or events, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctoral degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related area, and be able to demonstrate a significant record of university teaching experience, clinical experience and expertise, and scholarship.  Must hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and must hold or be eligible for the Illinois state speech-language pathology license.

History
Founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil, Lewis began as the Holy Name Technical School for boys. Aviation technology was the special emphasis of instruction and the origin of today’s highly regarded Department of Aviation. In 1952 the school was renamed the Lewis College of Science and Technology. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers - members of a 326-year-old religious order devoted exclusively to teaching and named after Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators – assumed direction of the institution.
