Gettysburg College is seeking a part-time/casual Community Service Officer (CSO) (up to 20 hours per week during the academic year, not to exceed 1000 hours per calendar year) to work in the Department of Public Safety. These positions will assist other departmental members in fulfilling the expectations of the organization’s mission.

This position will work 8 PM – 4 AM an alternating schedule by week. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the first and Friday & Saturday the following week. Hours and days may vary in accordance with the needs of the Department.

CSOs perform a variety of security / public safety duties including event security, campus patrol, dispatching services, enforcing laws and campus rules to protecting the lives and property within the campus community.


The Gettysburg College Department of Public Safety is a Community Service Oriented Patrol (CSOP) organization. Building relationships with the college community is an essential part of CSO duties. Successful candidates will have an understanding of customer service principles, conflict de-escalation, diversity, and basic community policing concepts.

Entry level CSOs are not required to have prior experience. Training will be provided. This position is an excellent opportunity to enter the Public Safety industry. Advancement opportunities may be available to successful candidates.

•High school diploma or equivalent.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Willingness and ability to engage with the general public and Gettysburg College’s diverse student population with a focus on community and customer service.
•Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one at time of hire.
•Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.

Preferred Qualifications:
•Previous experience in campus safety/security or law enforcement.
•PA Lethal Weapons Act (PA Act 235) Certification.
•Certifications in baton, pepper spray, CPR/AED/First Aid, Community Oriented Policing, or other related training.
