Assistant Professor, Digital Humanities and New Media Studies

The English Department is seeking a candidate for an Assistant Professor (tenure track position) whose work draws "digital humanities" and "new media studies" (related but often separately pursued fields) into conjunction. Candidates should ideally be able to contribute to profession-wide interests in theory, cultural criticism, public humanities, and the contemporary practice of scholarship by bridging between, or putting into dialogue, methods and topics commonly associated, on the one hand, with "DH" (e.g., "distant reading," "cultural analytics," text analysis, text encoding, corpus construction, GIS mapping, research and publishing infrastructures) and, on the other hand, with new media studies (e.g., media archaeology, network or platform critique, social media analysis, software studies, critique of artificial intelligence, gaming studies, digital creative literature and art, digital media and social justice). The ideal candidate's range would be broad enough to overlap with colleagues in other fields and approaches, including those in our department's distinctive research and teaching centers (see Candidates must be able to teach a range of English department courses.

Applicants are expected to have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in English (or a commensurable and appropriate field) except the dissertation (or equivalent) at the time of application. (Shortlisted candidates may be asked for available parts of their dissertation by the search committee; the dissertation is expected to be completed at time of appointment.)

The writing sample can optionally also describe or refer to a candidate's digital project(s). (Digital projects, data, code, etc., should be presented by means of links in the writing sample along with specific suggestions for what evaluators should look at.)
