The University traces its heritage to 1899, when Dr. John Draughon established Draughon’s Practical Business College in Savannah, Georgia. Over the past century-plus, South University has experienced continued growth transforming from a two-year college into a university offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs. With the introduction of South University, Online Programs, students can pursue both undergraduate degree and master’s degree programs ranging from the areas of Criminal Justice to Business – giving South University students more opportunities to make a difference, both personally and professionally.POSITION SUMMARY:The Director of Clinical Education is responsible for oversight of all aspects of the clinical phase of the Physician Assistant Program. It is expected that the Director of Clinical Education will provide effective leadership toward meeting program and Student Learning Outcomes related to the clinical phase of the program. The Director of Clinical Education will work with the Program Director and other members of the PA faculty to ensure that students consistently meet the program’s Student Learning Outcomes. The Director of Clinical Education will work to ensure that the program‘s clinical phase is in compliance with all ARC‐PA accreditation standards pertaining to supervised clinical practice experiences. The Director of Clinical Education should work in synergy with his/her counterpart at PA programs on other South University campuses. Full‐time Faculty also participate in activities that promote the stature of the academic programs, Departments, and Colleges and abide by the mandates set by the South University Board of Trustees and Administration. Incumbent must assure that the South University philosophy is considered in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this position: quality services to clients; development, growth, involvement, and recognition of employees; sound economic principles; and maintenance of an environment which is conducive to innovation, positive thinking and expansion.
KEY JOB ELEMENTS:Teaching:
- Performs Faculty responsibilities as outlined in the Faculty job description and the Faculty Supplement to the South University Employee Handbook.
- Teaches 12 classes per academic year (to include clinical rotations).
- Designs and delivers instruction in alignment with the South University model.
- Provides input to assist with ongoing program assessment and improvement.
- Relates professional/life/industry experience to learning by continuing professional/ technical skills development, and introducing professional/industry perspective into courses.
- Promotes student success by showing flexibility and exhibiting a passion for teaching and students.
- Manages the educational process to ensure a positive educational experience.
- Practices effective outreach to at‐risk and/or absent students.
- Communicates consistently and effectively with Supervisors, University Administrators, Faculty, and other South University Departments.
- Manages the learning environment through keeping accurate records and enforcing academic policies consistent with the University, College/School, Campus, or Online Division.
- Oversees the design and implementation of the clinical phase of the program.
- Oversees assessment of the clinical phase of the program to include evaluation of student performance, preceptor performance, and clinical site quality.
- Works with the Program Director and other program personnel to design and implement an ongoing clinical site development plan to ensure the program has adequate SCPE sites.
- Oversees the design and implementation of ongoing preceptor development and training strategies.
- Participates in the program’s admissions process to include application review, candidate interviews, and selection meetings.
- Adheres to university policies as described in the Employee Handbook, the Faculty Supplement to the Employee Handbook, job description, or other separate guidelines.
- Remains in compliance with South University’s academic policies and procedures, educational policies, both SACSCOC and programmatic accreditation standards, and state agency regulations.
- Serves as an academic advisor.
- Assists with the investigation of student problems requiring academic actions according to South University policies and procedures.
- Assists with the curriculum development and revision/process regarding the program (as necessary).
- Attends identified meetings with the Program Advisory Council (PAC), which meets at least twice per year.
- Upholds Program/Department/College initiatives designed to achieve student outcomes, and Campus/community relations.
- Engages in scholarly activities that contribute to the field of study and enhance the learning environment.
- aculty Development Activities:
- Completes professional development and in‐service activities each year as outlined in the faculty supplement.
- Accreditation (federal, state, regional), programmatic and or clinical work/history
- Terminal degree as a Physician Assistant; current NCCPA certification; eligible for licensure as a PA in the state in which the campus is located.
- 3 years academic experience (preferred); 5 years clinical experience (required).
- Experience in PA clinical training and administration and/or PA education administration
- For graduate programs, a terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in the discipline to be taught, with a concentration in the teaching discipline (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline) required.
- At least six months teaching experience at another post‐secondary education institution (preferred).
- Active, valid, and unencumbered state licensure or certification as applicable to the discipline.
- Membership in a professional association tied to area of instruction (preferred).
- Practical experience in the discipline of the program and knowledge of current best practices (in field).
