Proficiency in molecular genetic methods, such as high-throughput DNA sequencing and/or multi-locus genotyping. Be proficient, or readily acquire proficiency, in design and validation of multiplex PCR. Proficiency, or readily acquire proficiency, in molecular analysis software and bioinformatics for genotype analyses. Experience with the statistical software package R. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to train and supervise a diverse group of 8-12 undergraduate and graduate research assistants.
Position SummaryThis is a fixed-term grant funded position for one year with the potential for renewal up to three years. The incumbent will be responsible for management and supervision of experimental laboratory efforts, experimental design for DNA sequencing and genotyping efforts, data analysis for DNA sequencing and genotyping, and computational bioinformatics for research projects. The incumbent will be responsible for genotyping services for external and internal UGA projects. Additional duties include training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate research assistants as well as safety training for students and staff. The incumbent will be responsible for safety compliance for the laboratory and coordination with ESD for storage and disposal of hazardous waste in compliance with University policies. The incumbent will supervise daily execution of high-throughput genotyping for the project.

Duties/Responsibilities Duties/ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent will be responsible for assembling and thermal cycling of genotyping and DNA sequencing reactions for the Northern Recovery Unit loggerhead sea turtle project. Responsibilities include post-reaction processing, formamide denaturation, size standard addition, and preparation of genotyping plates and sample identification spreadsheets for submission to the Georgia Genomics Facility for fragment analyses. The incumbent will also perform genotyping duties as listed above for existing and new collaborative projects utilizing microsatellite markers for population studies and individual genetic identification assignments for species under study. Research procedures and experimental results will be accurately documented at a level that meets the standard set by critical scientific peer review. The combined projects process over 12,000 samples producing over 250,000 genotypes annually.
Percentage of time75 Duties/Responsibilities Duties/ResponsibilitiesDuties include training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate
research assistants in the laboratory and design and oversight of sample
tracking, processing, and DNA extractions for the project. The
incumbent will provide training for students and coworkers on proper use of
laboratory equipment and experimental methods. They will provide daily
supervision for graduate and undergraduate research assistants, assisting
them with experimental design and execution. Duties also include
coordination and management of laboratory resources.
The incumbent will serve as the laboratory safety compliance officer,
including hazardous waste management and laboratory safety to ensure compliance with University protocols. They will be responsible for supervision of safety training and
certification for laboratory personnel, including USG Right To Know training
and Chemical Specific Right to Know training and certification. The
incumbent will be responsible for maintaining laboratory safety and serve as
liaison to the University Safety Committee.
