General Summary

Reporting to the University Librarian, the Associate University Librarian for Collection Services and Technologies serves in a senior administrative capacity for the University Library and collaborates with library leadership on strategic planning, budget, policy development, communication, and assessment in support of the library and university missions. The Associate University Librarian for Collection Services and Technologies is responsible for oversight of the information technology, technical, and collection development operations of the University Library, including: information technology applications and services, acquisition and description of library collections, access and management of library collections (including e-resource lifecycle management), digital content creation, description, curation, and integration of digital content into consortial discovery systems. The Associate University Librarian for Collection Services and Technologies collaborates with other members of the senior leadership team and with library staff and committees on issues of shared responsibility, including acquisition of library materials, e-resource discovery and management, digital content creation and curation, etc., as well as liaising with the university’s centralized IT department to optimize support for library technology. The Associate University Librarian for Collection Services and Technologies may serve as a liaison librarian in assigned areas.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Information Technology Management:
    • Provides leadership for the overall direction and resulting priorities, goals, and objectives for technology services in the University Library and for library contributions to the academic and research computing environment at the University.
    • Prepares short-term and strategic information technology plans; identifies, researches, and recommends new technology products and initiatives.
    • Oversees the work of information technology units, committees, and working groups in the library.
    • Collaborates with the Associate University Librarian for Teaching, Research, and Engagement on the delivery and assessment of services provided at the services desk(s), on the delivery and assessment of services provided in technology-enhanced library spaces, and on digital content and service strategies, including the overall web presence and Via Sapientiae, the university's institutional repository.
    • Collaborates with the Director of Business and Administration on budget planning and acquisition of information technology, management of technology licenses, contact with outside vendors, and preparation of technology budgets.
    • Collaborates with university IT on support for the library’s computing environment, including open computing spaces, teaching labs, and maker technologies.
    • Serves as liaison to the Division of Information Services.
  • Technical Services Management:
    • Provides leadership for the overall direction and resulting priorities, goals, and objectives for technical services in the University Library.
    • Oversees the work of the Coordinator of Technical Services in managing the lifecycle of metadata and e-resources and the supporting processes, management, discovery, and retrieval systems that enable knowledge access and discovery.
    • Collaborates with the Associate University Librarian for Teaching, Research, and Engagement on issues related to acquisitions and collection management.
    • Collaborates with the Director of Business and Administration on issues related to acquisitions and budget planning.
    • Collaborates with colleagues in the library and in consortial organizations to design, oversee, and assess special projects related to content discovery, access, and management.
  • Collections Program Management:
    • Provides leadership for the development, management, and evaluation of library collections to support the teaching, learning, and research activities of the academic community.
    • Collaborates with the Director of Business and Administration in the preparation, allocation, and monitoring of the library materials budget.
    • Oversees the work of collection development units, committees, and working groups in the Libraries.
    • Provides leadership for library participation in cooperative/collaborative collection development activities.
    • Engages librarians and faculty in the development of long-term collection strategies, including resource sharing, digital content creation and acquisition, weeding, remote and shared storage planning, etc.
    • Serves along with the Collections & Scholarly Resources Coordinator as the primary spokesperson for the collections and scholarly communication to faculty, students and other library users.
  • Liaison Librarian Services:
    • Serves as liaison librarian to one or more academic or co-curricular programs, as assigned, including responsibilities for provision of information and instructional services, collection management, and engagement with faculty, staff, and students promoting library resources and services.
  • Maintains an awareness of best practices in academic librarianship with a focus on technology trends, the strategic role of information technology within academic libraries, and discovery services through reading scholarly and professional literature, participating in relevant conferences, workshops, and professional development programs, and applying lessons learned to current needs in the University Library.
  • Participates and represents the University Libraries in University, state, regional, or national professional service activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education & Experience

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible experience in academic libraries, at least 3 years of which must include administration/management.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget planning, project planning, and short- and long-term information technology planning and management.
  • Demonstrated experience building collaboration around IT services.
  • Supervisory experience.


Preferred Requirements

  • Academic degree in Information Technology or Computer Science, or documented record of substantial continuing professional education relevant to information technology in libraries.
  • Experience working with library consortia, library vendors, and technology vendors.
  • Experience with Library Services Platform (LSP) enterprise-level system implementation .
  • Experience with web site design and assessment, structured metadata, SEO and discovery, and/or e-resource lifecycle management.
  • Experience managing digital scholarship projects or programs.


Managerial Responsibilities

  • Provides direct supervision for three full-time, exempt staff (Coordinator, Collections and Scholarly Resources; Coordinator, Digital Services; and Coordinator, Technical Services).


Financial Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Director of Business and Administration an University Librarian in preparation of annual budget and special budgets for the University Library.
  • Recommends full-time and part-time salary/wage, acquisition of furniture, technology, supplies, and other acquisitions to support the work of staff in assigned units.


Other Skills & Abilities Reqd

  • Understanding of budgeting for library information technology projects, library operations, and library materials acquisitions.
  • Understanding of standards and best practices for content management systems, metadata, digitization, etc.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent planning, project management, budget management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to work in a collegial environment in order to provide excellent library services.
  • Knowledge of information technology resources, print information resources, and web-based information resources required to provide excellent library services.
  • Knowledge of MS Office, other routine information technology applications employed at the library or university level, and enterprise-level systems employed for the management of library collections or the provision of library services.


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to spend extended periods standing or sitting.
  • Kneeling, crouching, bending, and routinely lifting up to 25 pounds may also be required.
  • Visual acuity, hand-eye coordination, and motor skills sufficient to use a computer, copy machine, and other office equipment.
