The College of Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) has an immediate opening for a Director of Communications. 

Job Purpose: Operate under the guidance of Institute Communications leadership to ensure alignment with central communication strategies that strengthen and protect the brand and reputation of Georgia Tech. Design, implement and manage a communications strategy and programs for a college, school, or department. Serve as a unit representative within the Institute and with external entities regarding communications issues. Responsible for setting employee and/or group goals, deciding on organizational structure to meet the goals, assessing employee and/or group performance and providing feedback, and making pay recommendations. 

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Design, implement and manage all communications-related activities for unit to include development of strategic communications plan; liaison with internal and external media and other departments/units at GT.
  • Create, maintain website and other electronic media to inform and promote and enhance the visibility of the unit.
  • Oversee updates of public relations written materials, announcements, and other related communications documents.
  • Provide marketing, promotional and recruitment assistance to unit management in articulating desired message for targeted audience.
  • Supervise unit communications activities such as research, project planning and, metrics, marketing analytics, branding, and related areas.
  • Attend workshops, event related to the college, school, or department.
  • Administer unit communications budget.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Work Experience: Six to seven years job related experience
  • Certifications: N/A
  • Skills: This job requires skills in writing, editing and copywriting, as well as project and functional management. Working knowledge of production processes related to printed and electronic media is required as is use of office and specialized computer applications.

  Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Preferred Education: a Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in science, math, engineering or related field, and experience in communications
  • Preferred Work Experience:  six years job related experience in a science-related field. 
  • Preferred Certifications: N/A
  • Preferred Skills: General communication and marketing skills and cross-functional team leadership skills are preferred. 

Additional Information: The Director of Communications in the College of Sciences works closely with the College’s leadership to develop and implement communications strategies, and to produce publishable content, that effectively reaches a wide range of constituents, including:

  • Current and prospective Georgia Tech students, faculty, and staff
  • The College’s alumni and friends
  • The global network of scientists and mathematicians in academia, industry, and government
  • Members of the public

The ideal candidate will be a creative individual who will have demonstrated:

  • A passion for science and mathematics, and an ability to promote the value of basic/fundamental research through a variety of communication channels, such as webpages, newsletters, podcasts, video, and social media
  • An understanding of the broader impacts and applications of scientific discoveries
  • The ability to help researchers communicate the impact of their work so that it is accessible and understandable to the intended audience
  • The ability to work with science journalists, members of the press, thought leaders, and others to raise the visibility of science at Georgia Tech
  • The ability to counsel and support researchers who want to develop their personal communication strategy through broader public outreach, opinion writing, social media, etc.
  • A deep understanding of, and willingness to promote, the value of diversity in research.

The Director of Communications works closely with the College’s Dean, Associate Deans, Chairs of the College’s six Schools, and the College’s development and web teams. The Director will collaborate with Institute Communications and serve as the College’s primary liaison with Georgia Tech’s communications and marketing communities.   This position requires advanced skills in writing, editing, and multimedia communication, and the ability to interpret complex information and to tailor content to a variety of audiences, including those reachable by social media.

  In addition to developing and implementing communication strategies and preparation of publishable materials, responsibilities include:

  • coordinating the College’s social media presence
  • partnering with faculty, staff and students to identify and promote breakthrough research, educational advances, and scholarly accomplishments and recognitions.
  • developing materials for the College and School websites, newsletters, and other channels, including social media
  • organizing and promoting the “Frontiers in Science” public lecture series and other College events; collaborating with others on additional events, including meetings of the College’s Advisory Board
  • promoting the College’s participation in the Atlanta Science Festival
  • monitoring trends in media coverage of science and mathematics and keep the College leadership and key partners informed
  • supervising staff and technical student assistants 

Impact & Influence: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: unit management and staff, external and internal media contacts, alumni, other campus entities. This position typically will advise and counsel: unit management, external and internal media contacts. This position will supervise: unit communications support staff.
