DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the general direction of the Dean of Equity and Engagement, the Counselor/Coordinator will provide Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) core services (orientation, educational planning, follow-up) in the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Student Equity Plan, and University of California MOU Umoja Program. Will maintain and provide counseling and support services for incoming and continuing SSRS students, will collaborate with the SSRS Faculty, staff, and instructional counterparts for the success and retention of Black and African ancestry students, will prepare reports and collect data to meet college and MIS data requirements. Will conduct program review and assess student services outcomes. Requirements of the work may include evening and weekend work sporadically.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor and counselor. Instructors/Counselors also have the opportunity to serve on district and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

PROGRAM GOALS:

Committed to:
  1. Collaborating with campus partners to address State mandates, student recruitment to the program and Student Equity Initiative goals as counselor/coordinator of a campus program.
  2. Collaborating on the instructor/counselor/staff cross-disciplinary teamwork to recruit and prepare students from high school to transfer to four-year institutions.
  3. Supporting the identification, recruitment, training and coordination of peer mentors and tutors
  4. Acting as lead team member in collaborating and coordinating with programs, high schools and community agencies to promote and recruit students for the program.
  5. Collecting retention, degree completion, and transfer data to report to Umoja Statewide office, campus administrators, and the District.
  6. Making campus and community presentations with Director and instructors, as appropriate.
  7. Collaborate with SSRS Program Faculty Director and Dean to establish and evaluate student services/Instructional outcomes for program services and courses.

COUNSELING GOALS:

  1. Providing culturally responsive academic and career counseling, educational planning, and guidance to enable student to succeed academically.
  2. Integrating mentoring concepts and peer mentors into the personal development course and workshops.
  3. Developing relationships with four-year college and university outreach representatives including HBCU campuses; planning and organizing campus visits.
  4. Implementing a specific personal development/counseling course and community events for Black/African Ancestry students.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS:
  1. Attend all SSRS training sessions (including UMOJA related activities) and contribute to SSRS on-going professional development training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Knowledgeable about culturally relevant retention strategies for developing and teaching college success and/or career courses for underserved Black and African Ancestry students, and disproportionately impacted student populations.
  2. Demonstrated experience in coordinating, planning and retention and/or program assessment that serve traditionally underserved students.
  3. Demonstrated experience in developing high school and community partnerships.
  4. Demonstrated experience to work effectively with stakeholders and build partnerships on a project and/or as part of a program-based team.
  5. Strong organizational, written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to develop a peer mentor program.
  6. Knowledge of counseling technology and related student databases and tracking systems.
  7. Must have strong written and oral skills and be able to communicate with SSRS parents and the community at large.

HIRING RANGE: $62,772.00 - $103,094.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time (less than 100 % but at least 50 % FTE), Temporary, Non-tenure-track, Categorically-funded, 11-months per year
