Associate Director- Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE)

The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Associate Director (Academic Coordinator II). The Associate Director, working closely with the Director, oversees IRLE's research and academic activities and establishes the Institute's overall strategic direction and priorities. The AD plays a lead role in implementing the Institute's strategic plan; in launching new initiatives; and in coordinating activities for the Institute's affiliated research centers. As a member of the Institute's executive management team, the AD works closely with the Institute's Director and Assistant Director to manage the Institute's budget and operations.

The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) is an Organized Research Unit of the University of California at Berkeley that promotes better understanding of the conditions, policies, and institutions that affect the well-being of workers and their families and communities. IRLE informs public debate with evidence about inequality, the economy, and the nature of work, serving as a bridge between world-class research within the university and policymakers outside. IRLE is home to several nationally-recognized centers and programs that conduct research, education, and outreach on labor and employment issues, including:

  • The Center for Labor Research and Education (CLRE, also known as the Labor Center);
  • The Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics (CWED);
  • The Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE);
  • The California Policy Lab (CPL);
  • California Public Employee Relations (CPER); and
  • The Shift Project.
    IRLE also supports faculty and students throughout the university working in the areas of labor and employment.

    IRLE has an annual budget of approximately $13M and employs approximately 70 academic and administrative staff, as well as many graduate and undergraduate students. It works with and supports over 100 affiliated faculty from a wide variety of disciplinary departments and professional schools at UC Berkeley. IRLE's Director is a senior faculty member, and is responsible for providing the overall direction and long-range planning for the Institute. The AD is a member of the Institute's executive management team, and provides day-to-day leadership for the Institute as well as managing programmatic activities such as planning and implementation of new and existing academic activities. The AD assists the Director in providing substantive oversight to the IRLE research centers and programs, including planning and development; overseeing hiring and merit review processes for academic and research staff; and assessment and evaluation of activities and constituency needs. The AD supervises two professional staff members and coordinates, advises, and collaborates in a non-supervisory capacity with several additional staff.
    The AD also oversees IRLE's research program and assists IRLE's internal researchers with research design, execution, and external fund development. S/he also works with IRLE's faculty affiliates to develop their research programs; ongoing engagement with one or more of the relevant disciplinary literatures is important for this. The AD will need to maintain expertise in several of the policy areas on which the Institute works, and will guide junior staff in developing IRLE publications, such as our ongoing policy brief series. Depending on experience and interests, the Associate Director may also maintain an independent research program consistent with IRLE's mission; research funding and time and opportunities for publication are available to support this.

    Basic/Minimum Qualifications required at time of application:

  • Master's degree or equivalent international degree, or enrollment in a master's degree or equivalent international degree program.

    Additional Required Qualifications required by start date:

  • Master's degree or equivalent international degree.
  • At least 5 years of research and/or policy experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • All but dissertation or PhD in a related field, such as economics, sociology, political science, public policy, or business.
  • Publications record and familiarity with research methods and literatures in one or more relevant fields.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities and creativity in problem-solving.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the Institute's senior management team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership, program development and management experience.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a diverse academic environment.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in governmental/international/industry relations.
  • Experience in developing and administering research proposals and programs.
  • Experience with funding agencies and knowledge of UC and federal regulations & protocols (e.g., human subjects).
  • Demonstrated interest in IRLE mission.

    This is a full-time, career position. Salary will be commensurate with experience. UC Berkeley has an excellent benefits package as well as a number of policies and programs to support employees as they balance work and family. The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their work.
