General Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Access Services Coordinator, the Library Assistant 2 is responsible for providing access services to Lincoln Park Campus library users and supervising the Access Services desk during evening hours. Also performs resource-sharing duties as coordinated with other Access Services staff, supervising evening staff in pulling requested materials.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Ensure that Circulation Desk is adequately staffed and supervise Circulation/Reserve services 4:00 p.m. - 12:00 midnight, Sunday through Thursday during regular academic sessions. This schedule changes during intersessions and holidays depending on the library hours as follows:
    • 2:00 p.m. -10:00 p.m. Sunday through Friday during summer sessions
    • 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during intersessions and Spring Break
    • 12:00 Noon – 8:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday during December intersession.
  • Supervise the Access Services Desk during exam period extended library hours.
  • Arrange for schedule changes and substitutions as needed.
  • Train and supervise student assistants.
  • Delegate clerical assignments to students in coordination with the Access Services Coordinator and other Access Services staff.
  • Provide exceptional circulation services to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the community, including charging and discharging materials and explaining circulation policies to patrons.
  • Assist patrons in use of the online catalog, interpreting of bibliographic information, and locating library materials in all formats.
  • Manage evening circulation processes including barcoding, updating circulation and patron records, monitoring the book charges made from other locations, and investigating problems with circulation and/or reserve records.
  • Perform document delivery and interlibrary loan services as coordinated with other Access Services staff and supervising evening staff in pulling request materials.
  • Participate in the overall team effort and quality of service towards the efficient operation of the department and the university.
  • Participate in making recommendations for changes in circulation policy and procedures.
  • Monitor library usage as assigned; maintain statistics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education & Experience

  • Associate' s degree.


Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Previous library experience.
  • Automated library system experience.


Managerial Responsibilities

  • Shares (with all non-student staff members assigned to serve at the desk) responsibility for supervising student assistants, as assigned.
  • The incumbent directly supervises the student assistants while she or he is scheduled to work at the desk.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to spend extended periods standing.
  • Sitting, kneeling, crouching, bending, and routinely lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Visual acuity, hand-eye coordination and motor skills sufficient to use a computer, copy machine and other office equipment.
