ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR of EDUCATION (ESOL)
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

POSITION:

Stetson University seeks a broadly prepared and experienced educational leader for a full-time, tenure track appointment as assistant or associate professor.  We seek a dynamic teacher/scholar with a proven track record of innovative leadership in K-12 education with a focus on ESOL. Experience and expertise in Reading/Language Arts pedagogy is strongly preferred. He or she must be able to teach core courses in both our undergraduate and graduate programs while participating energetically in the rapidly changing field of teacher and educational leader preparation.  We especially seek a faculty colleague who can deepen our program’s signature emphasis on preparing teachers in the critical dimensions of class, gender, and culture in 21st-century K-12 education.  He or she must also be able to draw on the strengths of the University’s academic program in the liberal arts and sciences, business, law, and counseling.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The preferred candidate will have 1) earned doctorate from an accredited university in ESOL or a doctorate that meets the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) equivalent that qualifies him or her to teach stand-alone ESOL courses; 2) proven leadership ability in K-12 education; 3) demonstrated ability to contribute to our emphasis on inclusive excellence in our elementary, and educational leadership programs; and, 4) demonstrated understanding of research-based pedagogy.  Experience in Reading/Language Arts instruction and a wide variety of educational roles is highly desirable.  Experience in teaching at the college level is also highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses that lead to a Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) ESOL endorsement for program completers at DeLand and at the graduate center at Celebration as needed, to support the Department’s work with state and CAEP certification requirements, to undertake scholarly work in the field, and to assume leadership roles within the Department, College, and University as appropriate.

For more information on our expectations in teaching and scholarship and our support for faculty development, please see the Academic Affairs website: https://www.stetson.edu/administration/provost/faculty-resources/index.php

The Department:

Stetson’s Department of Education is currently shaping a distinctive, exciting focus on economic, social, and gender diversity and education for marginalized K-12 populations.  The Department houses a CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) accredited program with a strong record and long history of preparing teachers and educational leaders in undergraduate and graduate programs on our DeLand campus and at our graduate center in Celebration, near Orlando.  For additional information about the Department and the University, please see our webpage:

The University:

Founded in 1883, Stetson University (http://www.stetson.edu) is a private, selective university comprised of a rich array of liberal arts and professional academic programs. Collectively, Stetson’s faculty works with nearly 4000 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The University’s historic main campus, located in DeLand, enrolls more than 2,800 students in undergraduate programs in the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business Administration, and the School of Music. Stetson University College of Law, Florida’s first law school, moved from the main campus to Gulfport in 1945, and, with the addition of the Tampa Law Center, serves approximately 1,000 students working full-time or part-time toward J.D. or LL.M. degrees. Graduate programs offered at the main campus and at Stetson University Center in Celebration include Business, Accounting, Educational Leadership, and Counseling. Florida’s oldest private institution of higher learning, Stetson has regularly been ranked among the best regional universities in the Southeast and was the first private college in Florida to be granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
