About the College/Unit/DepartmentThe University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700 acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute’s primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow’s scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University’s Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy.
Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is home to the R/V Savannah. The R/V Savannah is operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet.

Position SummaryThis position will work with a Principal Investigator to conduct field research in physical oceanography. Responsibilities will include operation of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operations, as well as periodic assistance with deployment/retrieval/software usage of other instrumentation, including but not limited to high frequency radar (HF radar), ADCPs, CTDs, and acoustic release systems.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies• Knowledge of basic glider commands for piloting and data transfer
• Knowledge of basic time series analysis tools
• Troubleshoot communications components and internet data transfer difficulties
• Deploying and recovering gliders at sea, as well as periodic assistance with HF radar maintenance (lifting heavy objects, trench hardware operations)
• Sea-going activities related to coastal oceanographic data collection and mooring deployment/recovery
• Planning and organization skills
• Understand and interpret scientific information (data and technical manuals)
• Operate in a variety of conditions, climate controlled and outdoor environments
