Associates Degree in related field. Two years relevant medical assistant experience or experience in a related field. Certifications may be required. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Performs specialist duties or services for the Sam Houston State University Physicians Clinic. Cares for and treats patients according to accepted nursing and medical standards.

Primary Responsibilities

Performs specialist duties. Delivers direct patient care as assigned. Performs testing and gathers information. Communicates with the provider and documents in medical record. Manages medical inventory management. Maintains patient and staff confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. Provides assistance and care for sick and injured patients under the direction of the Physicians and leadersip staff. Rooms and interviews patients regarding their visit on their arrival in the exam room. Takes and records patients’ vital signs in the medical record. Maintains supplies, equipment, and pharmacueticals as necessary. Maintains exam rooms and checks equipment between patient screenings. Records, on electronic health records, all pertinent information concerning care, vitals, and medication. Assists with answering the phone and taking patient messages. May include blood draws, routine injections, obtaining specimens, and assisting with minor procedures under the direction of the practitioners. Plans, develops, implements, coordinates and monitors programs or services. Assists in the development of policies, procedures and guidelines. Coordinates and schedules appointments and activities. Interprets policies and procedures. Compiles, tracks, and reviews data and reports. Attends meetings. Prepares, reviews, revises and distributes reports, documents, and correspondence. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Must be extremely accurate in following written and oral instructions regarding patient care. Must be able to communicate effectively with outside medical facilities, students, other staff and visitors. Alertness and careful attention is required to prevent injury to self or others. Must have a positive attitude toward change, professional growth, and teamwork, as this clinic is a start-up. Must have proficient computer skills. All documentation is recorded in electronic health record. Must work efficiently due to busy schedules. Requires a general knowledge of standard office functions. Requires good knowledge of procedures and practices. Must be able to use standard office software. Must be able to apply policies and procedures and solve routine problems of a repetitive nature. Knowledge of health care regulations and medical terminology.

This position is located at Sam Houston State University’s main campus in Huntsville, Texas, until the Proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine facility opens in Fall 2020 in Conroe, Texas.
