High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. Four years of experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in one or more craft areas. Experience in carpentry, paint and sign work preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Assists staff in the performance of a variety of maintenance and repair work.

Primary Responsibilities

Provides customer service to the Sam Houston State University campus community. Performs routine assistance and duties with carpentry, paint and sign related projects, repairs, and emergencies. Duties include but are not limited to assisting with construction assignments, working from prints, sketches, or verbal descriptions, painting, sign work, roofing issues, water leaks, picture hanging, sidewalk/cement repairs, brick and block repair, floor and tile work, hanging drywall, ceiling tile hanging/repair, cabinet and furniture work/repair. Performs preventative maintenance work. Documents issues and work in work order system. Checks equipment, windows, doors, all aspects of building and takes care of general emergencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Working knowledge of power tools, planers, saws, jointers, drills, and other carpentry tools. Ability to work from blueprints and sketches, cement tools, pneumatic nailers and staplers. Requires proficiency in all phases of work performed. Working conditions are considered fair, but involve more than average 25‑50 percent exposure to one or more disagreeable elements such as dust, dirt, heat, and limited work spaces. Work areas may be high, low, inside or outside, with exposure to weather. Serious hazards are present which require extreme care to avoid serious injury. Position requires driving and operating a university vehicle, therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the University’s insurance carrier is required. During emergencies, operational failures, and peak use periods, employee may be called in when off shift to work an extended shift. Special procedures sometimes require extended hours.
