St. Charles Community College is located just west of St. Louis, nestled in the heart of growing St. Charles County. Established in 1986, SCC is a public, comprehensive two-year community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs in the arts, business, sciences and career-technical fields. SCC also provides workforce training and community-based personal and professional development as well as cultural, recreational and entertainment opportunities.

We are seeking a part-time Science Lab Technician (20 hours per week) who will assist the Science Lab Coordinator in maintaining science laboratories for student instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepares chemical solutions, student unknowns, and standardizes solutions accurately following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to be used by instructors to grade students.
  • Documents solutions and student unknowns for instructors.
  • Develops and updates SOPs for the standardization and creation of solutions to accompany student lab procedures.
  • Communicates information about the chemical and concentrations to all chemistry faculty as needed.
  • Provides input on the creation of new labs with faculty to create procedures and guarantee proper chemical handling and waste procedures.
  • Aids Science Lab Coordinator in the ordering of supplies and equipment for chemistry, physical science and physics labs. Maintain SCC credit card purchase records and receipts.
  • Washes delicate glassware used by students, faculty, and technician including, volumetric pipets and burets.
  • Organizes, prepares and cleans laboratory rooms for each lab section.
  • Maintains stock and laboratory equipment, including pH meters, spectrophotometers and instrument gas.
  • Opens and closes (lock) lab classroom door and maintains student equipment drawers.
  • Assists instructors in lab activities, greenhouse, aquarium and exhibit care ensuring that any hazardous materials, biological and chemical, are disposed of according to federal and state guidelines.
  • Maintains waste logs and ensures proper safety guidelines are communicated to faculty and students. Maintain and supply the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to instructors, students and DPS. Coordinates with Environmental Health and Safety Officer for waste collection and disposal.
  • Updates lab schedules and inventories.

Education and/or Experience

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with at least six months general laboratory experience in a related setting. Ability to operate microscopes, balances, pH meters, autoclave and spectrophotomers preferred. Computer software experience including word processing, data base and spreadsheets preferred.
