Performs semi-skilled to skilled level duties under general supervision to support operation and maintenance of the greenhouses, gardens, or grounds.
Essential Job Functions:
The horticulture technician will be assigned to one of three support crews for the greenhouse, gardens or grounds; may be reassigned by the Greenhouse and Gardens Manager either for temporary periods or on a permanent basis as appropriate. This position reports directly to the appropriate team leader or faculty member for the team they are assigned to.GROUNDS1. Mow warm and cool season lawn grasses.2. Weed, cultivate, water, and maintain planting bed areas.3. Operates commonly used grounds maintenance power equipment.4. Performs routine maintenance on power equipment.5. Assists in the pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs.6. Monitor and perform routine maintenance of landscape and turf irrigation systems.7. Assists in the set-up of materials for outdoor lab activities.8. Responsible for cleanup of trash on grounds.9. Responsible for snow and ice removal as needed. GARDENS1. Weed, cultivate, water, and maintain planting bed areas.2. Assists in the growth and care of numerous flowering and bedding plant greenhouse crops.3. Transplant plant material to outside beds.4. Water, fertilize and maintain Quonset greenhouse and shade house plant materials.5. Assists in preparation and planting of seedbeds.6. Operate commonly used grounds maintenance power equipment.7. Assists in the set-up of materials for outdoor lab activities.8. Responsible for cleanup of trash on grounds. GREENHOUSE1. Weighing and mixing soil media. Transplanting and organizing plants on the greenhouse benches.2. Propagation of various greenhouse plant materials.3. Assists in the growth and care of numerous bedding plant crops, flowering plant crops and tropicals.4. Watering and fertilizing of all Quonset greenhouse crops and display planting areas.5. Monitoring greenhouse crops, diagnosing disease and insect problems and participating in control measures.6. General maintenance of structures and systems related to greenhouse operations.7. Assists in the preparation of horticulture class laboratory activities.8.Completes all mandatory training and two professional development each year.9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience:
1-2 years grounds, maintenance, and greenhouse experience and/or equivalent horticulture training.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Skilled in equipment operation and maintenance
- Ability to use garden and hand tools, aerators, etc.
- Strong communication skills; ability to understand and follow instructions and
- avoid safety problems.
- Ability to read and interpret printed materials for chemicals, basic charts,
- diagrams and instruction material for equipment.
- Ability to follow standardized policies and procedure
- Must exhibit proper conduct and appearance at all times
- Evidences a history of demonstrating and professional behavior.
Working Conditions:
- Requires working in all types of weather conditions, exposure, and handling of various plants, materials, chemicals, dust, fumes, and gases, etc.
- Working on occasional weekends and/or special events outside of normal working hours may be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Standing and/or walking approximately 7-8 hours per day
- Significant physical stamina to perform tasks that require frequent/continuous physical activities
- Frequent to continuous bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, and pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying
- Requires frequent carrying/lifting of materials up to 45 pounds. Occasionally may lift over 75 pounds and requires the use of proper lifting techniques according to OSU-Oklahoma City policy.
- Must be able to use both feet for repetitive movements as in operating foot controls on equipment.
- Ability to use both hands for repetitive actions requiring simple/firm grasping and/or fine manipulation. Ability and skill to operate tools and equipment required for job
