Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under general supervision, the research assistant 2 will plan and carry out the research project in accordance with approved research protocols. The project’s initial objectives include defining the duration of reduced brain perfusion, a physiologic mechanism directly impacting brain performance, while breathing gas mixtures containing between 30% - 100% oxygen (hyperoxia) at 1 atmosphere. The secondary purpose of this project is to define the extent that individual differences in ventilatory responses to hyperoxia (ventilatory phenotypes) predict the corresponding reductions in brain perfusion. The research assistant 2 will be primarily responsible for planning and carrying out research work, supporting laboratory staff and assisting with laboratory maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.Plan and carry out research work in accordance with established and approved protocols, including recruiting, consenting and retaining study participants. Collect data from study participants and maintain clinical research records. Properly collect, store and analyze human biologic samples. (25%)

2.Create and maintain statistical database of study variables. Clean and prepare database for complex analysis. (15%)

3.Utilize Compumedics High-Density EEG platform for data acquisition. (10%)

4.Verify quality of EEG acquisition and completeness of other physiologic data. Make recommendations for development of future human protocols. (10%)

5.Compile data for reports for regulatory body and study sponsor. Assist with preparation of manuscripts and conference abstracts/posters. Record minutes for weekly lab meetings. (10%)

6.Oversee inventory of experimental supplies and place orders. Maintain complete and accurate equipment accountability. (10%)

7.Direct the training and task completion of students. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.Maintain a clean and organized laboratory space. (5%)

2.Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with principal investigator and continuous contact with research assistant 3 for assignment, debriefing, and status updates on weekly goals.

University: Moderate contact (2 to 3 times monthly) with other departments including IT, regulatory departments and facilities to exchange information regarding research.

External: Frequent contact with study participants in the course of conducting research. Occasional contact (4 to 5 times annually) with vendors to exchange information, order supplies and maintain equipment functioning.

Students: Weekly contact with students to oversee task completion.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. May share in the training of and direct the work of students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree and 1 to 3 years of research experience, or Associate’s degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of research experience. Current or prior coursework in clinical training (e.g. nursing/respiratory/radiology/EEG) is preferred. Prior experience with clinical research (e.g. EEG/polysomnography) is preferred. Current human subjects (CITI) certification required. Must be eligible for UH research credentialing.

REQUIRED SKILLS

1.Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the health care field.

2.Ability to rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.

3.Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives under general supervision.

4.Ability to operate laboratory and EEG acquisition equipment.

5.Skill to use personal computer (IBM-compatible operating system) with proficiency in SPSS, Microsoft Office, EndNote. Familiarity with RedCap software preferred.

6.Ability to effectively interact with colleagues, supervisors and customer face to face.

7.Ability to meet consistent attendance

WORKING CONDITIONS

Clinical, office and general laboratory environment. Possible exposure to hazardous materials, including blood and bodily fluid specimens. May be required to use personal protective equipment, including standard lab coat, gloves and safety glasses when appropriate. May be requested to work evenings to accommodate research participant availability.
