Job Purpose
Stanford PACS is a research center within the School of Humanities and Sciences that develops and shares knowledge to improve philanthropy, strengthen civil society and effect social change. Stanford PACS publishes the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR). It supports nine major research initiatives: Civic Life of Cities, Digital Civil Society Lab, Effective Philanthropy Learning Initiative, Ethics and Tech in the Public Sphere, Global Innovation for Impact Lab, Philanthropy and Democracy, Project on Democracy and Internet, Polarization and Social Change Lab, and Recording Civic Action in China. Stanford PACS hosts the biennial Philanthropy Innovation Summit for high net worth donors, and several public and private events throughout the year to connect students, scholars, practitioners, philanthropists, and other sector leaders.




Through our three faculty co-directors and other affiliated researchers and fellows, Stanford PACS has relationships with five schools and twelve departments at Stanford University. This allows us to leverage the intellectual assets of a diverse, world-class faculty across the University and provide a unique platform for knowledge exchange between academia, the nonprofit and for-profit community in Silicon Valley and globally.




Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Director, Partnerships & External Relations will be responsible for center advancement and stewardship, and partnership development with relevant individuals and institutions to increase the visibility and sustainability of the organization. The role will entail designing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy for major donors and institutional funders, as well as overseeing the design and execution of the Philanthropy Innovation Summit and related partnerships and relationships. The individual will also provide collaborate with the Executive Director on advisory board engagement and related activities.

The Director of Partnerships & External Relations will direct outreach/stewardship through public and private events and other external constituent engagement opportunities for Stanford PACS audiences. This individual will oversee and guide the Events & Partnerships Manager in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy to support the outreach and knowledge dissemination efforts of Stanford PACS through public and private events. The role will also oversee marketing and branding of all events and programs to meet organizational objectives and will drive cross-functional collaboration across the organization and oversee the management of select outside vendors, to ensure effective operations in these areas of responsibility.

The Director, Partnerships & External Relations is a member of the senior leadership team for the Center, working in collaboration with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, SSIR Managing Editor, SSIR Publisher, and the Faculty Co-Directors.

CORE DUTIES*:
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, provide strategic leadership to create a development plan to grow annual fundraising goal from $10M to $15M+
  • Recommend, manage and execute integrated marketing plans/programs and strategies to meet business objectives. This includes developing a pipeline of new corporate sponsor and foundation prospects to support programs and initiatives
  • Develop and manage the brand strategy for individual program(s) incorporating appropriate channels (i.e., web presence, digital and print)
  • Manage market research and campaign/program/service/event analysis used to inform decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting.
  • Assess market opportunities and track market trends. Recommend marketing improvements based on findings.
  • Responsibility for staff including the recruitment, management, development, and retention.
  • Manage program budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Guide event planning and execution as needed to support marketing objectives.
  • Manage vendors on specific projects.
* - Other duties may also be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Previous experience in product, program and/or services marketing.
  • Experience with digital, web, print, social media marketing.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams toward a common goal.
  • Experience with project management and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with market research and data analysis.
  • Understands how to implement effective marketing programs across multiple channels.
  • Creative problem solver with strong critical thinking skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Prior experience in planning and managing program budgets. Preferred Knowledge and Skills
    • Seven to ten years of experience in institutional advancement and/or relationship management with major donor fundraising or foundation support.
    • Track record of closing 7-figure gifts.
    • Experience creating annual development plan.
    • Experience working within a complex academic institution and/or a professional business office setting.
    • Exceptional relationship management skills.
    • Creative, adaptable and entrepreneurial, with a bias for action.
    • Familiarity with donor management tools, analysis and processes.
    • Ability to work in a fast paced environment under deadlines with minimal guidance.
    • Demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
    • Knowledge of philanthropy and the social sector.
    • Experience developing and implementing marketing and branding for academic institutions and/or nonprofit organizations.
    • Strong analytical skills and experience with online analytics and trends.
    • Supervisory experience.

    Certifications and Licenses:
    None required PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
    • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
    • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
    • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
    • Rarely sort/file paperwork.
