Assistant Director of Communications - McCourt School of Public Policy

The Office of Strategic Communications and Events at the McCourt School of Public Policy provides strategic communications counsel to internal colleagues and crafts messages for students, faculty, alumni, policy makers and practitioners, and other internal and external audiences. The office is responsible for all internal and external communications channels, including but not limited to: McCourt social media channels, McCourt's annual magazine Policy Perspectives, and a myriad of audience-specific communications.
In collaboration with the Strategic Communications and Events team, the Assistant Director of Communications will help develop and implement a strategic, multifaceted communications program designed support the mission and strategic objectives of the McCourt School of Public Policy. The incumbent will be the chief implementer of McCourt's Impacts for Common Good communications initiative, designed to tell the story of the McCourt community's impact in the real policy world. S/he will also be a part of a team charged with telling the story of student life at McCourt. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Builds relationships with McCourt School faculty, researchers, Centers, Institutes, and students, telling the stories of the research and impact in the U.S. and around the globe.
  • Plans, develops and writes original content, features, and other stories and multimedia packages that accurately communicate McCourt's strategic priorities, vision, values and mission, and are consistent with the university's visual and editorial style guides.
  • In conjunction with the Digital Media Associate, builds, maintains, and executes a content strategy and calendar encompassing all School, student, events, and research activities for the academic year.
  • Delivers accurate and relevant content on deadline, adhering to journalistic standards.
  • Manages a small team of McCourt School students who will attend events and create content for the McCourt School website to paint a picture of student life on campus.
  • Drafts and optimizes marketing content like blog posts, Q&A's, and case studies to promote McCourt School programs and offerings.
  • Assists in pitching policy researchers and experts to national, local, and inside-the-beltway press.
  • Assists in writing talking points, FAQ's, and other strategic communications resources.
  • In conjunction with the Strategic Communications and Events team, helps organize and promote McCourt School events.

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Five or more years experience with an emphasis on writing, content creation, and communications management required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and executive presence for effective interactions working with internal and external clients and individuals, including top policy, economic and political science researchers
  • Ability to work independently, assuming responsibility, prioritizing and carrying out duties with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to write about a wide range of policy, politics, and governance research, including economic, health, education, international development, energy and environment policy
  • Candidates must be able to using their writing skills to make complex policy research accessible, with an emphasis on how it impacts people in the real world
  • Excellent organizational skills, verbal and written communications skills, and the ability to articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of McCourt School to a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and set and meet deadlines, and ensure that staff team does the same
  • Understanding web analytics and ability to develop ideas to drive web traffic in strategic areas
  • Experience with Google Analytics or similar program
  • Experience with WordPress preferred
  • Experience in policy or politics communications preferred
