Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Critical Black Urbanism
The Department of Urban Planning at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Critical Black Urbanism. We seek a scholar who studies the Black experience and whose research and teaching has direct relevance for urban planning. Attractive candidates for this position might study racial segregation, Black migration, Black geographies, community organizing, community and/or economic development, the Black diaspora, policing and incarceration, urban and planning history, critical legal studies, or related topics.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Urban Planning, Ethnic Studies, Geography, Sociology, Political Science, or a related social science discipline at time of appointment, have a robust research agenda, and be prepared to teach and mentor students at the undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. levels.
To apply, please submit a brief cover letter, CV, a research statement of less than 500 words highlighting scholarly contributions of recent research and plans for the near future, one publication or writing sample that best represents your work, a teaching statement of less than 300 words outlining the content of a class you would like to teach, a statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and three letters of recommendation.
This position reflects a commitment by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and the Department of Urban Planning to emphasize communities of color in scholarship, teaching, and professional practice. Faculty in the school and department have ongoing collaborations with ethnic studies departments and centers at UCLA. We expect that the faculty member who holds this position will benefit from and strengthen existing linkages to the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, the Department of African American Studies, and other relevant units.
The Department of Urban Planning currently hosts 18 tenured/tenure-track planning faculty, 6 affiliated tenured/tenure-track faculty, 7 long-term adjunct/practice faculty, 3 active professors emeriti, 35 PhD students, 150 master's students, and a growing number of undergraduate majors. Department faculty also teach undergraduate students in the Luskin School's Major in Public Affairs, which just completed its inaugural academic year. We have a tradition of intellectual leadership in urban and regional studies and design, and our faculty, students, and alumni are committed to social justice and progressive planning ideals.
