Junior or Assistant Specialist - Molecular and Cell Biology - Zoncu Lab

The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior or Assistant Specialist in the Zoncu Lab, in the area of cell signaling and metabolism, at 100% time with an expected start date of November 2019. The Zoncu lab experimental systems are cell lines, recombinant proteins and purified organelle preparations. The methodologies are localization using fluorescence microscopy, molecular interaction using biochemical methods and genome-wide functional interrogation using pooled Crispr/Cas9 and shRNA technologies.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated, ambitious individual with strong organizational skills. A willingness to learn new techniques and skills is essential. Good interpersonal skills are also necessary, as the job will require working in a group environment. Must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate experimental time courses. The successful candidate will be appointed at the Junior or Assistant rank commensurate with experience and accomplishments.

Responsibilities:

This position includes research as well as organizational tasks in the lab. The majority (70%) of the effort will be dedicated to research work, with the expectation that this will lead to an authorship in a publication. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for several aspects of the day-to-day operations of the lab, including (but not limited to) purchasing, receiving, unpacking of reagents, general lab organization.

Basic Qualifications:
-Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Bachelor Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field with two more years of prior related work experience -or- Master's Degree (or equivalent international degree) in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
-Good written and oral presentation skills
-Proficiency with molecular cloning, DNA preparation and sequencing, PCR.
-Experience growing mammalian cells in tissue culture
-Experience with standard biochemistry protocols
-Experience with basic fluorescence microscopy
-Experience with image analysis software & packages (Matlab, Metamorph, ImageJ)

Appointment:
This position reports to Dr. Roberto Zoncu. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Salary and Benefits: This position provides full benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley Specialist series salary scale.
