Assistant Director, Career Services - Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy

Assistant Director, Career Services - Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy

The McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University is a top-ranked public policy school located in the center of the policy world in Washington, D.C. Our mission is to teach our students to help design, analyze, and implement smart policies and put them into practice in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, in the U.S. and around the world.

McCourt is seeking a talented Assistant Director who will provide career advice and expertise to the holistic, student-focused career development services for more than 400 McCourt students and more than 4,000 alumni. He or she counsels students and alumni in career planning and job searches, develops and conducts workshops on job search techniques and related issues.

The Assistant Director will interact with and provide counsel to international, mid-career and evening students. Focusing on international students, the Assistant Director can provide visa-specific advising on academic training opportunities for F-1 visa Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training, and J-1 visa Academic Training. The individual must be organized and able to make recommendations on career programming. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

Advising
  • Advises graduate students/alumni, specifically those in unique populations- international, evening/part-time and mid-career students
  • Advise students/alumni on career planning and job search strategies and execution to ensure competitive readiness for interviews through in-person and virtual one-on-one and group sessions
  • Works with students/alumni on creating polished and professional career deliverables; on developing and enhancing interviewing skills and preparation.
  • Advises students/alumni on networking and making professional connections.
  • Counsels students/alumni on opportunities in various policy areas and employment sectors such as private, federal/state and local government, non-profit and international, NGOs, etc.
  • Assists international students/alumni in identifying professional aspirations, setting realistic and tangible career goals, both domestically and internationally
Programming
  • Collaborates with Director and Assistant Director of Employer Relations to create programming (in person and virtual) for students focused on emerging public policy trends, student interest, and competitive employment trends.
  • Assists with collaborative programming across university constituents and partners to increase internship and employment opportunities for students.
  • Assists with annual new student career development orientation; and developing alumni career panels and networking events.

The Assistant Director works closely with faculty, staff, students, employers, alumni and other stakeholders who may influence the career path of the students.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in a related field of study
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience, which may include experience in counseling and/or advising experience
  • The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal, organization 0al and oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to assess individual needs, motivators and differences in abilities and career interests
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Exposure to Symplicity and/or similar career development databases
  • Some evening hours required

Preferred qualifications
  • Masters degree preferably in counseling, education, or a related field of study
  • Knowledge of the public policy market, employers and job search strategies
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience with international and/or mid-career students
