Director of Inclusive Programs and Services
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is seeking to add an experienced Director of inclusive Programs and Services to our team of high-performing professionals.
In this position, under the direct supervision of the ADEA Senior Vice President for Access, Diversity and Inclusion (ADI), you will provide strategic assistance to the ADI leadership to create, develop, manage and deliver innovative education and training programs that work to advance ADEA ADI’s priorities of promoting a welcoming, diverse, inclusive, equitable and respectful environment within United States and Canadian dental schools and allied dental health programs. In addition, you will be directly responsible for the daily management and execution of activities and events for the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP).
Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) (60%)
With the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and as part of the National Program Office, manages and coordinates the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Summer Heath Professions Education Program (SHPEP).
- Program Management: In partnership with AAMC, establishes and monitors the overall program work plan; coordinates activities of SHPEP, serves as a liaison to the RWJF, and works with the National Advisory Committee (NAC). Serves as the ADEA SHPEP Deputy Director and works collaboratively with the ADEA SHPEP Co-Project Director and the AAMC counterparts (AAMC Co-Project Director and SHPEP Deputy Director) to create the Program’s strategic plan to include development and management of policy, programming and budgets. Additionally, provides leadership and strategy to foster a rapport with the American Association of Community Colleges, National Dental Association, Hispanic Dental Association, Society for American Indian Dentists, Society for the Advancement of Native Americans and Chicanas/os in the Sciences, National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education and the Hispanic Association for Colleges and Universities.
- In conjunction with the AAMC SHPEP National Program Office (NPO) staff, develops an annual marketing plan and materials that integrate with ADEA’s overall diversity and student outreach strategies; assists SHPEP sites with curriculum development, recruitment strategies and related issues.
- Provides budget management and annual reporting to funder and other stakeholders.
- Collaborates with dental and allied dental health associations, health profession organizations, and ADEA Educational Pathways to develop initiatives and grant applications to support student diversity and academic readiness throughout the educational pipeline with an emphasis on recruiting and retaining historically underrepresented student populations in to dental education.
- Works with the ADEA SHPEP Co-Project Director to provide updates of the SHPEP Program regularly to the ADEA senior leadership, ADEA Administrative Boards, and ADEA Advisory Committees.
- Assists in maintaining strong partnerships with dental profession associations and health profession organizations to promote and collaborate on SHPEP initiatives.
- Works jointly to plan, coordinate and conduct the SHPEP Annual Grantee Meetings with the AAMC SHPEP Deputy Director and team.
- Partners with ADEA staff to provide updates annually for the SHPEP Financial Planning Workshop.
- Participates in annual SHPEP site visits with the ADEA SHPEP Co-Project Director and National Program Office (NPO) team to monitor program achievements, areas for development and progress through evaluations and reports.
- Collaborates with the AAMC Deputy Director to oversee SHPEP communications draft reports and correspondence and manages meetings with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the SHPEP National Advisory Committee (NAC).
- Develops program content for SHPEP Annual Grantee Meetings and National Advisory Committee (NAC) meetings.
- Works with ADEA Educational Research to provide updated data and information related to SHPEP Scholar applications, matriculation, and graduation from dental school and other postsecondary programs.
- Plans on-going evaluation strategies and disseminates results to constituency.
Inclusive Programs and Services Responsibilities (40%)
Develops, manages and delivers workshops, training sessions and activities in conjunction with ADEA ADI leadership to foster and improve cross-cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, cultural competency, a humanistic environment, and inclusive excellence within the ADEA community. This includes providing support for the following ADEA student programs:
- Manages the application process and reviews materials for the Junior Faculty Award and Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence programs.
- Assist in the development, program, and execution of the annual ADEA Diversity and Inclusion Workshop in conjunction with the Senior VP for ADI.
- Manages Higher Logic groups for ADEA ADI projects with support from ADEA IT.
- Creates and develops initiatives in support of Heritage and other inclusivity program months (e.g., Women’s History Month, Children’s Dental Awareness Month, National American Indian Heritage Month, Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month, Pride Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, National Dental Care Month, National Disability Awareness, African American History Month, World AIDS Day, National Dental Hygiene Month, World Oral Health Day, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month and Older Americans Month, International Women’s Day, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, National Minority Health Month, or similar inclusive programming).
- Manages the ADEA Chapter registration and annual updates for Chapter officers and bylaws and manages content updates for ADI website and the Council of Student Residents and Fellows website and other social media sites in conjunction with the ADEA Communication and Marketing.
- Manages the application review process for the ADEA Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee membership.
- Works closely with the Senior Vice President of ADI and coordinates meetings, related materials, and drafts meeting notes.
- Assists in preparation of reports, articles, presentations, surveys, and other materials.
- Conducts presentations on diversity and inclusion, belongingness, well-being and related topics as needed to promote an inclusive and safe climate in dental education.
- Plans the annual Women Liaison Officers (WLO) business meetings at the ADEA Annual Session and manages the WLO appointments by the U.S. and Canadian Deans.
- Assist in the planning, execution, and development of all ADEA diversity and inclusion programming for ADEA Annual Session.
- Keeps abreast of national and international issues related to diversity and inclusion and best practices for improving access, diversity and inclusion in the health professions, with an emphasis on dentistry and allied dental health careers.
- Assist in the recruitment process to expand and sustain ADEA Chapters for Students, Residents and Fellows, as needed.
- Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the Senior Vice President of ADI.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education with a minimum of eight years of relevant diversity and inclusion programming experience in a postsecondary institution or health professions education. An advanced degree may be substituted for two years of relevant work experience. Degree(s) must be conferred by the start date of the position.
- Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a higher education setting is highly preferred.
- Strong written, research, presentation, oral communication, and interpersonal skills required.
- Experience working directly with student pre-professional and/or pipeline programs to improve access, diversity, and inclusion for historically underrepresented groups in postsecondary education.
- Effective problem-solving skills – anticipate and assess problem situations to identify causes, gather pertinent information to generate effective solutions and make recommendations.
- Excellent diplomacy skills and professionalism.
- Team player with the ability to manage and implement multiple complex projects for diverse audiences in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly organized to set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals and track data, information, details and activities.
- Strong commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
- Focus on member needs - anticipate, understand and respond to member needs to enhance organizational effectiveness.
- Proficiency in Outlook, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel, as well as other applicable software.
- Availability by phone and email, as needed on evenings and weekends.
- Ability to travel nationally/internationally 20%-25% overnight and occasional evenings and weekends work.
