Oglethorpe is a small, highly selective, independent, private university located on a beautiful, 100-acre campus in Atlanta. Our classical liberal arts mission serves a diverse student body of approximately 1,000 undergraduates. The campus is near Atlanta's famous Buckhead neighborhood; using the Oglethorpe University MARTA rail station, it is a 10-minute ride to the Midtown Arts district and a 15-minute ride to downtown Atlanta. Oglethorpe's distinguished faculty is composed of teachers/scholars committed to providing the highest quality instruction to students.

Genetics (BIO 201) is a course required of all Oglethorpe Biology and Biopsychology majors, and is listed as a pre-requisite for many upper level Biology courses that are of interest to both Biology majors and pre-health students. The instructor hired for this position would be expected to work 28 hours a week in support of students in BIO 201. He/she will attend all BIO 201 lectures (MWF 8-9 AM and MWF 10:30-11:30 AM 6 hours total) and all BIO 201 labs (M 1:30-4:30 PM, T 8:15-11:15 AM, and T 1:30-4:30 PM 9 hours total) During these sessions, he/she would circulate in the classroom and laboratory to help with in-class/active learning assignments and experiments, to provide feedback to the full-time instructor on student engagement and attitudes, to assist with lab prep and post-lab clean up and to manage other course logistics as needed. The assistant instructor will also host regular office hours (3 hours per week). Another 10 hours a week would be occupied with grading of quizzes, written materials, lab notebooks, and/or exams. The total expected commitment for this instructor is 28 hours per week for a 16-week semester.

Compensation

$16./hour ($420./week for 16 weeks) for B.S. level candidates. M.S. level candidates will be compensated at a higher rate than B.S. candidates pending qualifications.

Starting and Ending Dates

The first class day of the Fall 2019 is Monday August 19th but applicants should be prepared to work in the week prior to the start of school to work on course development with the rest of the BIO 201 team, the last day of fall semester classes is Friday December 6th. Final grades are due by Wednesday December 18. The assistant instructor will be expected to work until final BIO 201 grades are submitted.

Qualifications

A B.S., B.A. or an M.S in Genetics, Molecular Biology or a related field. Applicants must have experience working with genetic model organisms; work with C. elegans is preferred. A record of prior successful experience as a teaching assistant and as a participant in genetics laboratory research is desirable. B.S. level applicants who have graduated from Oglethorpe having successfully completed BIO 201 Genetics are strongly urged to apply.
